Favorite Restaurants

There's a lot to choose from in the Upper Valley region. Here are my favs for appetites and palates of all types.
Perfect family spot for breakfast, brunch, lunch. Great coffee, delicious crepe meals; something for everyone. Right next door to Jake's Quechee Market so you can pop in and pick up your necessities on the way out!

While Worthy Kitchen in Woodstock is closer and has a more diverse menu (also worth a visit), Worthy Burger remains my favorite. Delicious farm-to-table burgers, great beer selection, and funky atmosphere in an old train car in South Royalton.

Owner Skip knows how to do it right. This place is casually elegant, with yummy food, great wine list, and excellent service. Perfect if you are heading to a show at White River's Northern Stage!

Little funky food truck with a California vibe right on the way into Quechee. Fish tacos, onion rings, and lemonade. Sounds about right.

Well, you can't beat the location, and sitting over a waterfall drinking from Simon Pearce's handblown glass is a pretty remarkable event. I love their brunch because I like to see the bridge and pop downstairs to watch the glassblowers ply their incredible craft, but a drink at the bar under the handblown glass chandelier is pretty special, too. Plus the potato chips at the bar are worth the higher prices at this Vermont mainstay. YUM.

Great for families in funky White River Junction. This place is always packed, so expect a bit of a wait, but well worth it! Incredible beer menu, really interesting tacos (my fav: the chill -- raw ahi tuna with wonton crisps and a spicy sauce), and a cool atmosphere (surf and ski movies on the big screens, shuffleboard, a climbing wall that I have ever seen anyone climb as it is horizontal) make this place a favorite hangout.

When you take the necessary trip to quaint Woodstock, pop into Mount Vert. Great coffee, yummy pastries, delish breakfast and lunch. A perfect break before you head into Yankee Books, up Mount Tom, or to the Woodstock Inn Spa for a massage!

This is my happy place. Not a traditional outdoor market, but rather a select grocery store with uniquely Vermont products, WFM is worth a wander for the samples alone. But do not miss the deli counter and coffee counter. Grab a sandwich (my fav: the Quechee Gorge -- local sourdough bread, 3 types of local cheese, Fox's Mustard, tomato and bacon... mmmmmm) and an Aztec Latte (a delectably spiced mocha), sit out by the river, and enjoy! Then head back in and pick up your produce, beer, and cheese for your stay at my cute little cottage!

Summer Fun

Not that you need a list, but here is a list of my favorite things to do and places to go in the summer in Vermont!
Yeah. Go there. Look at the pretty glass, then go downstairs and watch the amazing artists blow it. It is so cool, they do a great job explaining what they are doing. Then go upstairs and drink a beer from one of the handblown glasses at the cool copper bar with the blown glass chandelier floating above you.

If you are planning your Vermont summer vacation in June, then stop by the Quechee Hot Air Balloon Craft and Music Festival. This multi-day festival features more than 20 hot air balloons that float through the sky. Enjoy the colorful view while taking in live music from up-and-coming bands and live entertainment, like a sky diving demonstration or competitive disc fetching dogs. Guests can even ride in a hot air balloon, as long as they book in advance. The fun does not end when the sun goes down. More hot air balloons will light up the sky in the Dusk Balloon Glow. You can see the balloons take off from my house most mornings in the summer, but there is something amazing about seeing 20 take off at once.

You have probably seen the King Arthur brand in your grocery store, now it is time to see the place where it all happens - King Arthur Flour’s Bakeshop and Cafe. Have a meal -- or just a cookie - and watch the bakers do their magic. Get it on the fun and take a baking class while you are there.

Yup, I worked here for 6 years and helped to build the beautiful new theater, so this company holds a big place in my heart. The shows are great, the people even greater. Summer is the time for education at Northern Stage, so if you have kids and are here in July check out the annual Summer Musical Theater Production -- 30 area kids performing on a professional stage with the support of this LORT-D company. September - June a schedule of world-class theater happens in this intimate 240 seat space. A great way to spend an evening!

If you find yourself looking for a lovely drive through Vermont, with a cute town and some theater at the end -- visit Weston on your Vermont summer vacation. The Weston Playhouse's summer season is filled with classic summer stock hits. After the show, you can catch a more intimate cabaret with their summer company.

GET OUT INTO IT!! Vermont is ripe with amazing hikes. The Long-Trail, the regional hikes you have to be local (or friends with a local) to find, and of course the Appalachian Trail. You can do an hour-long loop, or spend three days hiking a section of the AT. No matter what, take a step on the famous cross-continental hike-way, and you can brag to your friends that you hiked the AT... Trailheads abound. My favorites are on Elm Street in Norwich for a nice little loop, or on Pomfret Road in Woodstock. Let me know if you are interested in hikes and I will pull maps for you! There are also lots of trails with waterfalls and swimming holes in the area!

Locals call this the best Farmer’s Market in Vermont. On top of featuring local farmers with fresh vegetables, fruits, meats, and eggs, there are also pastries, arts and crafts, live music, and seasonal events. Enjoy a summer morning at the Farmer’s Market on your Vermont summer vacation while picking up the ingredients for a one-of-a-kind, local family dinner. http://www.norwichfarmersmarket.org/

This quintessential New England town is filled with historic buildings, covered bridges, small shops, and Vermont’s only national park. After a morning of exploring the town during your Vermont summer vacation head to the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park. Take in the stunning views from the Billings Dairy Farm and the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller Mansion. Do not forget to meet Bernard, the tallest tree in Vermont, located right next to the mansion. I can't believe there is not a picture associated with the link...

Ok, so, Thursday nights during the summer, this little farm is the place to be. The drive is beautiful (dirt roads— you don’t need 4-wheel, but should know these are BACKROADS) and when you arrive you will find the quintessential Vermont experience— fresh food and amazing music with local ciders/brews/ice cream in an orchard. Definitely recommend making the 25 - 35 minute drive. Visit the Feast and Field website for music lineup, food ordering, and to make your reservation. https://feastandfield.com/#thursday-farmers-market-musical-lineup
