SIGHTSEINGS AND TRIPS ON THE COTE D'AZUR

Brigitte will send you attached to a mail a tourist guide so that you make the most of your holidays with a list and description of the places she recommends you to visit in NICE and around, if you stay at her apartment in that city, and as well in the VAR region if she hosts you in her villa of PORT-FREJUS. You can find below under the form of chapters, some of the main places she recommends, in the city of NICE and in other places of the RIVIERA and even in PROVENCE.
Visit the center of Nice, walking along the Promenade des Anglais up to the Jardin Albert 1st, stopping at the Tourist Office, at number 5, just before the Hotel Meridien and then arriving at the Place Massena, finally crossing towards the old city There you can visit the Cathedral Sainte Réparate on Place Rosetti where you can also eat one of the delicious ice creams sold in that square, sitting on the stairs or at a coffee table. Upon returning, cross the park called "Coulée Verte" as an allusion to an avalanche of vegetation, consisting of 12 hectares. of gardens with a water mirror located near the Place Massena. From the PLACE MASSENA you can take the new tram to the Port or other places. It is recommended to tourists, not to miss that square at night, since it is probably one of the most beautiful in the world with its Italian architecture, its lights, its fountain of Neptune and many relaxed people walking around it, especially the children splashing into the water mirror located just at the beginning of the Coulée Verte. Therefore, it can be said that Nice is an Italian city that speaks French and is so loved by the British people that they have given their name to its most famous Avenue: the Promenade des Anglais. As already explained, it is also from that square that we recommend to take the beautiful and completely new tramway that drives directly on the level of the floor without having to step inside to access to it and that from there, transports you to the other mythical square of the city, which is named after the revolutionary hero Garibaldi, as well as to the famous Puerto.

It is one of the many VELOS BLEUS stations of the city located along the PROMENADE, near the VIEILLE VILLE. One of the most delicious experience in NICE, is to cycle along the PROMENADE with one of the Vélos Bleus of the city, up to the airport and following on that way up to Cagnes sur Mer along the Littoral cycle path on 14 kms. After a lovely ice-cream bought on your arrival at Cagnes sur Mer (without abandonning your bike), we suggest you to come back along the coast and again the PROMENADE, back to the port of Nice, where you can leave the bicycle in one of the stations located around the Port. Then we recommend you to have dinner with one of the gorgious pizzas of the restaurant called "Les Arcades", located at the bottom of the Port, near the Place de l'Ile de Beauté (Corsica). Then, you can walk up to the square Garibaldi through the RUE CASSINI and take the tram from there to return to Place Massena.

Take the small train that leaves from the PROMENADE, opposite the Hotel Meridien, on the beach side, and drives you to the Park du Château, from where you have a beautiful view over Nice and the sea. On your return, walk towards the Cours Saleya, just in front of the Jardin Albert 1er, at the entrance of the Old City. There you go through the magnificent and traditional Flower and Vegetable Market which opens every day (6 a.m. - 5.30 p.m. (except Mondays which is reserved to the Flea Market) and on Sundays until 1.30 p.m.) and observe for a while the Opera House located there, before sitting on one of the many restaurants terraces of COURS SALAYA where you can try some typical Nice recipes. In the Vieux Nice or Vieille Ville (Old Town) near the Place Massena square, you find narrow streets curving in irregular fashion between old buildings with red-tile roofs, just as with any medieval village of the region; there are shops of clothes and gifts, etc ., but particularly typical small restaurants where you can also taste some special niçoise "fast food" such as pisaladiere, pan bagnat, socca or hand made raviolis.

I would recommend a Nice tour with the little train that leaves in front of the Meridien Hôtel and takes you all around the city and up to the Château or Castle Hill above the PROMENADE. The Park of the Chateau is situated at the top of the hill that overlooks the city, on the location of a former 1706 castle which has been destroyed.by Louis XIV’s army because the duques of Savoye of which depended the County of NICE and belonged together to the Kingdom of Sardinia, were allied to the Habsbourg, themselves at war with France. The view from the hill shows the stunning breathtaking beauty of Nice. There are several ways to reach the park; one can drive to the top, take the elevator, climb the 213 steps from the bottom to the observation platform or take the “Petit Train Touristique” (the touristic little train) which begins its journey from the Promenade. However on that hill, there are Roman rests and as said, a beautiful view over the Baie des Anges or Angels’ Bay as is the name of the Bay of Nice. For more information about the train, you can call 06 08 55 08 30. In summer, there is a train every 30 minutes, so it is not necessary to book, but simply to walk along the PROMENADE up to the Meridien Hotel and buy your ticket at the same train stop, its costs is 7 euros per adult. The trip which lasts 45 minutes, is running every day and leaves every 30 minutes; it stops 10 minutes at the Castle; but you can stay there and walk back, going down to the PROMENADE by the stairway going down behind the COURS SALAYA and LES PONCHETTES, near the Quai des Etats Unis.

We propose a day trip to the Principality of Monaco. From Nice, you can go to Monaco by bus, train, private car or rental car. If you decide to travel by train, the advantage is that the NICE station is central and can be reached in about ten minutes from the Promenade, but in Monaco, the distance between the station and the Rock with the Prince's Palace which is the first place to visit, is a bit big, which requires you to take an internal bus. You can also walk about 15 minutes to the entrance to the Rock. By car, it is recommended to take the Basse Corniche to admire the landscape. You can also go by the Upper Corniche or the Middle one; they all pass through the port of Nice. The Upper Corniche offers a magnificent view of the coast. For more information and images, see below. When you arrive at Monaco, follow the signs: PALAIS PRINCIER - MUSEUM and go to the PARKING DES PÊCHEURS where you will climb by elevator to the summit of the ROCK or to the Vielle Ville (Old City) also called MONACO VILLE. It is recommended to go to Monaco via the Lower Corniche, with the bus no.100 that can be boarded in the Port of Nice and on the way back with the bus no. 112 that you board just over the Casino gardens at Monte Carlo, visit the medieval village of Eze, 700 meters high, with the opportunity to admire the impressive landscape from the high and middle Corniches, between Nice and Monaco. To reach the Port of Nice, take the tram at Place Massena, get off at Place Garibaldi and walk about 200 meters until you reach the bus stop that travels to Monaco at the top of the port, in the small side street next to the church. The bus to take is no. 100 and not the 100X, because the latter leads to Monaco on its way to Menton, but it is a bus scheduled for a quick and direct trip, without the possibility of observing the places it goes through. That bus ride from Nice to Monaco / Menton) along the Lower Corniche (la Basse Corniche), which is the one which runs near to the sea, It is probably one of the most stunningly beautiful bus ride in the world. As this 45 minutes trip to Monaco is absolutely great, we recommend to sit on the right side of the bus if you can. The bus rides along the coast, crossing Villefranche, Beaulieu, Eze, Cap d'Ail before arriving at the bottom of the Rock of Monaco which is the oldest part of the Principality, called Monaco-Ville also named "the Rock" because it is built on a height. The Principality of Monaco, a city-state of 2 km2 locked on French territory, is the second smallest independent state in the world after the Vatican, with the highest population density. The Principality is a privileged destination because of its temperate Mediterranean climate and its many luxury hotels. The modern history of Monaco is inseparable from that of the Grimaldi family, which has ruled the Principality continuously since the 13th century. The principality is independent since François Grimaldi dubbed Malizia, who in 1297, seized the existing fortress at this place, disguised as a Franciscan monk. The coat of arms of the principality, representing two monks holding a sword, recalls this event. The authority of the Grimaldi was definitively recognized in 1314, but it was not before the 1911 Constitution that the Monegasque State became a constitutional monarchy. It is ruled since 2005 by Prince Albert II of Monaco. From the rocik, you will reach the second most important place to visit at MONACO, which is the MONTE CARLO CASINO and the area around. This is quite a good walk and I will recommend you to take one of the buses which goes from MONACO VILLE to the CASINO TERRACES (Line no. 2 : Monaco Ville to Exotic Gardens : 6 stations) or MONACO VILLE to the CASINO SQUARE (Line no. 1: MONACO VILLE to SAINT ROMAN: 10 stations). If you travel by car from Nice to Monaco and are parked in the Pêcheurs car park, to move to the Casino, you will have to take the car from that car park and park in front of the Casino, taking note of the place number and floor of the car park where you left your car.

The bus number 100 stops in Monaco, on the Place d'Armes: this first stop is just at the entrance of the tunnel. Get off and head towards the road that leads to the old town and Palace Park. To climb over the Rock, take “Avenue de la Porte Neuve” to the Porte du Rocher. If you arrive early, you can attend the daily change ceremony of the palace guard at 11:55. If the flag of the Palace floats, it means that Prince Albert is at home. Do not bother with a visit to the palace, inside it looks like all palaces and castles, but go and see the Cathedral where Princess Grace married and is now buried. then visit the Oceanographic Museum Jacques Cousteau which cost of entry is 14 euros. That world-renowned Museum has valuable collections of marine life and it is dedicated to all the sea sciences, includes a famous "Aquarium" with 90 swimming pools, which offers visitors a great show. Although the municipality of Monaco is almost entirely urbanized, it offers visitors beautiful green spaces, among which the best known is probably the Exotic Garden. This eden built on the side of the rocky walls of Monaco-city on the Rock, offers a remarkable panorama of the Principality and the French and Italian Riviera. This garden of 11,500 m², inaugurated in 1933 by Prince Ludwig II, presents an exceptional collection of “succulents” and giant and surprising cacti. Another major asset is the Japanese Garden of Monaco, a 7000 m2 work of art organized in the respect of the Zen principle. On the Rock, you can also walk in the narrow streets of the city and when you are tired and hungry, you can have a pizza in one of the restaurants of the old town, because despite the exclusivity of this place, you can get very good prices.

We are now in Monte Carlo, strolling through the Casino Gardens of the Casino Square which is at the epicenter of the gambling halls, grand hotels, opera, jewelery, haute couture boutiques and a "parade" of luxury cars like nowhere else. First, go to the Tourist Office where you ask for a stamp of Monaco for your passport, in memory of your visit. Then start your tour of casinos and gambling halls that are one of Monaco's specialities. Don’t let the bouncers dissuade you: go ahead and walk right into the entrance to the Opera House and Grand Casino, but to get into the famous Casino itself, you’ll need to pay a fee, show your passport, and have a jacket for men (all the other Casinos are free, try the one next to Café de Paris). Walk between the Café de Paris and the Grand Casino and head to the far side to see the famous hairpin turn of the Monte Carlo Grand Prix. It was Prince Charles III who, in 1863, had the idea of authorizing casino games in Monaco, banned in neighboring countries. In 1866, the district of Spélugues, where the casino was located, took the name of Monte-Carlo, Carlo, in honor of the Prince. The Monte-Carlo Casino was built in 1863 by Charles Garnier, the architect of the Paris Opera, it is a historic building in the Principality, like the Prince's Palace. The atrium of the Casino gives also access to the Opera House, which for more than a century has been the scene of international opera creations, prestigious concerts and exceptional ballets. In addition to the tourist attractions offered throughout the year, such as the Prince's Palace, the Monte Carlo Casino and the Oceanographic Museum, Monaco is famous for its many international events. The Principality is home to various sporting events, such as the Formula 1 Grand Prix, the Monte Carlo Rally, the Tennis Open at the prestigious Monte-Carlo Country Club or the Football Super Cup between the winning team of the League Champions and the winning team of UEFA. The Principality also organizes prestigious cultural events such as the International Circus Festival. If you went to Monaco by bus 100 and stopped at the PLACE D'ARMES, the best is to change strategy to go back to NICE because this is a very busy route. So it is best to take the bus no. 100 at an earlier stop, because otherwise, you will find that when your bus arrives, it will always say "Full" and will pass in front of you without stopping, although there will be another one in 15 minutes. We suggest therefore that after the visit of the Casino, you take the bus immediately from the stop of the Casino Gardens, near the Tourist Office, or even from the stop of the Place des Moulins, which is still further back, that’s to say some 10 minutes walking backwards, instead of risking to return to the first stop of your arrival at the Place d'Armes, where you will find that all the buses arrive already full at this stop. The bus n ° 100 runs only until 20:30; after, it is necessary to take the train but keeping in mind that the last train leaves at 21:20. The exception is Thursday, Friday and Saturday when there is a special no.100 night bus that stops at the Place d'Armes at 23:40, 01:10, 02:40 and 4:10 in the morning, to bring you back to Nice, where it will leave you at the port. If you miss the last bus, instead of taking a taxi back that will cost you about 90-100 €, it's better to take an Uber that will only cost you around 40 €. The trick is that Uber being banned in Monaco, you have to walk to the top of the Casino Square, pass the bubble shops, climb the stairs and cross the street. Now you are no longer in Monaco, but in the French city of Beausoleil, and Uber will work there! If you wish to pop up to EZE VILLAGE on your return to NICE from MONTE CARLO, Go back up to the Tourist Office/Casino bus stop and cross the street and go a half block to the left; this is the Casino bus stop going in the other direction (towards Nice), and this is where you catch the bus no.112 for the 20 minutes drive to the perched Medieval village of Eze. The bus only runs Monday-Saturday, and goes only every couple of hours (roughly around 10am, noon, 3 pm and 5 pm, but pop into the Monaco Tourist Office to get the flyer with the exact times. After you visit EZE, To get back to Nice, you can take either Bus #112 or Bus #82 from Eze, which taking into account both of them, leave approximately once each hour for the 30-minute drive back down to Nice. Again, drop into the Eze Tourist Office when you arrive for printed bus schedules to make it easy.

Excursion by bus or train to the coastal cities of Antibes, Juan Les Pins and Cannes (bus number 200). I would recommend you for that first trip to CANNES, to look at a map of south of France in order to locate that city and the places you will go through. You might go out early with a rented car and your swimming costume. You drive along the PROMENADE up to Antibes and Cannes, not by the motorway, but by the national road which is a bit longer but where you can appreciate better the resorts existing along the coast. After CAGNES SUR MER, you take care of leaving the national road and join a smaller one which is the D6098 along the sea up to ANTIBES, you pass MARINELAND which can be another place to visit another day in order to observe the dolphins and other sea animals with a cabaret attraction for a night out. Near from Marineland is also the village of BIOT with its glass blowers, which is well worth a visit in another opportunity.. But that first time, you go through ANTIBES up to JUAN LES PINS which is a very appreciated resort and where you can swim a while in the blue sea and even eat at a beach restaurant. Then going on with your journey, you pass GOLFE JUAN along the sea and arrive at CANNES.

In Cannes, you will walk along the most famous avenue of LA CROISETTE where you will admire plenty of boutiques of marks of cloths and perfumes, chic hotels and restaurants, in particular the famous Carlton, the Majestic and the Martinez as well as the Palace of Festivals where you might take a selfie on the red carpet where artists climb to the glory as they are granted the Golden Palm each year ! Throughout the CROISETTE which is the equivalent in smaller, of the PROMENADE DES ANGLAIS at Nice, we can see beautiful sandy beaches and their private establishments including some very famous restaurants, with in summer, a large number of holidaymakers who take advantage of comfortable transats and umbrellas, while many other sunbathe on a simple bath towel. You can also walk along the new port where you can see the small yachts of the “poorest” of this world though the biggest ones are parked in the famous old port. Finally, it is good to know that the busiest pedestrian street (where you also have motor vehicles), is the narrow and long Rue d'Antibes, parallel to the Croisette, equipped with 3 meters wide sidewalks on both side, for the transit of buyers and walkers, which gathers from the most sophisticated high priced boutiques to some more popular stores. If you have still time, go to the old Cannes city on the left hand side of the Hotel de Ville, walking up the narrow old streets. Visit the shops and climb up to the old Suquet where there is a tower, old walls and houses which dominate the sea, the port and the islands; you can even have dinner in a typical restaurant of the old Cannes, before going back to Nice by the A8 motorway which you reach through the Boulevard Carnot, behind the train station. In less than half an hour, you will arrive at Nice by the motorway at the no. 50 way out. You also can return with the same bus no.200 with which you began your excursion journey.

This famous village is located near CAGNES S / MER. To get there, you can take the motorway in the direction ANTIBES / CANNES and exit at CAGNES / VENCE, then follow the signs. If you decide to spend the day, you can visit the Maeght Foundation, which is the second museum of modern art in France and brings together a large number of paintings and sculptures by visual artists such as Giacometti, Léger, Kandinsky, Miró and others. Perched on top of a green hill, 15 minutes from the sea, the medieval village of Saint Paul de Vence enjoys an exceptional panorama stretching from the sea to the Alps. The climate is typically Mediterranean, warm and temperate with lots of sunshine. Winters can be a bit cold. Of the almost 3,600 inhabitants of the town, only 300 live in the village itself. The others live in luxurious pavilions or villas scattered in the valleys and on the heights. "A story that can be read in its stones" could be its unofficial motto. Old stones always well preserved! Village typically Provençal, Saint Paul is entirely surrounded by ramparts of the XVIth century built on the order of François 1st. Arriving at Saint Paul, we immediately notice the famous inn "La Colombe d'Or" which has hosted many artists like Yves Montand, Chagall, Modigliani, Picasso or Matisse ... and still houses many of their works.

For that trip, we recommend you to take the motorway from Nice at the end of the Promenade, passing through the airport, taking on the right at the DIGNES / GRENOBLE / A8 road sign. Stay on the right row and take the channel that indicates A8 direction CANNES, ANTIBES, AIX EN PROVENCE. Pass through CAGNES, ANTIBES and CANNES and leave the motorway at MANDELIEU-CANNES LA BOCA, immediately after CANNES. There you take the way of the seaside, called ESTEREL or GOLDEN CORNICHE, consisting of about 30 kms of red rocks, blue sky and water, with a beautiful view over the Mediterranean Sea and towards Cannes when you stop at any of the sightseeing place for visitors, so that you can look both onwards and backwards to admire the landscape of the sea and its coast from Cannes up to Saint Raphaël. You also can have a stop for a lovely bath in one of those creeks along the coast, which are called “calanques”, among the red rocks where you can snorkel and see all sorts of submarine plants and even fish and sea animals such as sea stars, sea tomatoes and sea hedgehogs, being careful not to step on them. https://www.ot-mandelieu.fr/route-corniche-d-or-esterel By that road, we reach SAINT RAPHAEL and FREJUS, two cities worth visiting, first the city of SAINT RAPHAEL, walking along its small Promenade, after leaving the car in one of the two parking spaces located in the Port des Pêcheurs In the city center.

The Côte d’Azur occupies an exceptional natural site in the heart of the French Riviera as Côte d'Azur is often known in English. That Mediterranean coastline of the south eastern corner of France, extends from Menton near the Italian border in the east to either Hyères or Cassis in the west. It is a privileged crossroads between the Alps, Provence, Corsica and Italy. Blessed by a sunny, temperate climate, it attracts visitors from all around the world. This coastline was one of the first modern resort areas which the British upper class at the end of the 18th century made famous. With the arrival of the railway in the mid-19th century, many aristocrats, wealthy people, writers and artists used to come on holidays, such as Queen Victoria and King Edward VII, when he was the Prince of Wales, as well as the Rothschild family, Somerset Maugham and later on, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Edith Wharton and Aldous Huxley. After World War II it became the home of many celebrities, such as Elton John and Brigitte Bardot. It remains to this day, one of the most sort after destinations in France and is ideal for family and group holidays as well as romantic city breaks at the cities of Nice or at any other such as Cannes, Monaco, Menton, Fréjus or Saint Tropez.

Another trip could be an excursion to SAINT TROPEZ, taking the A8 motorway again from Nice, to exit this time at FREJUS, where you will follow the signs for SAINT AYGULF, SAINTE MAXIME and SAINT TROPEZ, driving along the coast, and that will take you on more than 30 km, at the bottom of the bay of the name of this small but very famous city. The entry to the famous seaside resort is often difficult because of the queues of visitors that are forming there but it is the price paid by the holidaymakers to discover that city where the rich and the artists meet during the hot season and make their show for the people passing by. Very popular among the “famous”, the city has seduced the international “jet set” in the 1960s, and still attract them with its beaches and nightlife. The paved area of La Ponche is a witness to that past as a fishing village, although the yachts are now more numerous than the fishing boats in the old port. We recommend you to visit around SAINT TROPEZ during the day, the beaches of the peninsula such as those of Pampelone or Tahiti, as well as some beautiful villages located on its heights, such as RAMATUELLE and especially GASSIN, which crowns a hill and offers a spectacular view over the sea from a peripheral path of that picturesque village. But whatever you visit during the day, at night, you have to walk on the old harbor where the lucky ones exhibit their luxurious boats that holidaymakers admire one after the other. You will go to the Portalet Tower, at the beginning of the dike that protects the city (symbolic protection since the portion of the sea behind this dike, is totally peaceful) and enjoy a delicious ice cream while watching the yachts on the sea side or on the other side, the terraces crowded with people sipping a fashionable drink like a Monaco or a Panaché and chatting with their friends. You can also have dinner on one of these terraces or simply enjoy a good pizza, then go dancing in a disco. At night, you will return to Nice by the highway that you reach through a mountain road from Sainte Maxime, but you will have to be very careful along the 20 km of this road between Sainte Maxime and the highway because it is a little narrow and all in turns, although in perfect condition.

PORT-FREJUS, an extraordinary creation made up of small buildings in the early twentieth century seaside style, surrounding a tourist port that has the symbolic value of resurrecting the Roman port of Forum Julii, the ancient Roman city that 2000 years ago was 2 km further inland due to the retreat of the sea that has taken place over time, probably due to the collapse of the Roman port by the sand accumulated at that place along 2000 years. As a witness of this phenomenon is the lighthouse of Forum Julii which remains alone two kilometers away from the present shore of the sea, being known as Augustus Lantern, which marks approximately the limits of the old Roman port. It is precisely up to the indicated limits that the construction of the last stage of Port-Fréjus was recently extended, with the digging of one of its channels up to the Boulevard de Provence near the old Roman lighthouse. Therefore, it can be said that this beautiful tourist port symbolizes and reminds the port nature of the ancient Roman city. We recommend to make a new stop near the Square of Hermes where you can admire the reproduction of a sculpture found in the Frejus soil through archaeological works carried out in this city. That sculpture represents the God Hermes with its two faces, one of the god Pan or of a fauna with goat features and the other of Dyonisos or Bacchus, according to different interpretations. We also recommend our visitors to stop for a moment on the bridge near the Square of the God Hermès, behind the port, or on the beautiful pedestrian bridge of the port itself, and admire the channel that reaches the foot of the old city where the Roman port existed, with the postcard view of the hill of FRÉJUS dominated by its cathedral and its ancient medieval constructions. After this introduction, it is well worth strolling through the new port which is a very pleasant place to walk among the beautiful boats with no other concern than to feel the gentle breeze and the caress of the sun on your skin as you watch the T-shirts, souvenirs and restaurants along your way, climb up the wooden bridge at the center of the channels and observe the tourist activity from there. Enjoy an ice cream and sit down to one of those terraces of the beautiful café located in a small convivial square at the foot of the bridge, called "Brasserie Jacques" ! .

5.8.- LERINS ISLANDS: These are two gorgeous islands just in front of CANNES. They are called SAINTE MARGUERITE and SAINT HONORAT. Both are beautiful and show an extraordinary view on the coast and the sea, as well as a rich botanical asset of thousands of plants and trees where hundreds of birds make their nest and are protected for their reproduction. SAINTE MARGUERITE is a true haven of peace, the largest of the Lérins islands, which offers an idyllic setting, between its streams and its pine and eucalyptus forest. Traversed by 22 km of footpaths, the island stretches for 3 km from the Estanque Batéguier to the ornithological reserve at the Pointe de la Convention. Rich in history, the island has also archaeological remains and the fortress of Fort Royal, former prison of the man of the iron mask, of whom it is said that he was the twin brother of Louis XIV and that he had been jailed to prevent him from aspiring to the throne. It is said that he had also been locked in the Château d'If in the bay of Marseille. Fort-Royal houses the Museum of the Sea, as well as the activities of the Cannes Youth Association. We highly recommend a day in one of those islands. SAINTE MARGUERITE is under the protection and administration of the Ministry of Waters and Forests and has got nice small beaches to swim with the children without any danger. You can also go around in bath suit along the forest paths to admire the vegetation or visit the fortress where historical events have taken place in the past. The island of SAINT HONORAT is separated from Sainte-Marguerite by a sea arm of 600 meters wide called "Middle Plateau” (Plateau du milieu). With1,500 meters long and 400 meters wide, the island is covered with umbrella and maritime pines. This island is home for the monastery of Lérins monks and the remains of a fortified monastery and its many chapels. It is a place of meditation and only swimming in the channel between the two islands is allowed. To reach the islands, you take the boat at the entrance of the old port of Cannes, at the end of the Avenue which goes from the HOTEL DE VILLE to the PLAGE DU MIDI, where there are tens of restaurants in front of the aligned boats in the port. It says: Billeterie pour les ISLES DE LERINS. The cost of the journey is of about 12 Euros for the round trip and in summer you can take a boat every half an hour.

Located at the extreme south-east of France, near the border with Italy, Menton is at the same time a city-garden, a maritime city and a seaside resort. Its exceptional sunny climate, almost subtropical throughout the year, favors the cultivation of orange trees, lemon trees, palm trees, mimosas and the extraction of exotic essential oils, its numerous gardens created with talent are a real delight and make dream the horticulturists ... The winters are very mild in Menton and the frost is almost nonexistent, the gardeners and the landscape can then without restrictions (or almost) give free rein to their imagination and their inspiration for the creation of the gardens. Then, they are admirably maintained and pampered by a small army of gardeners who know the Mediterranean plants. Thanks to these very favorable conditions, Menton has been rewarded 5 times by winning the 1st prize of the flower cities competition. The presence of 2 marinas, the old port and the coastal one are pretexts to enjoy the sea and the sweetness of life that reigns throughout the year. It is worth visiting the old town with its beautiful old facades, where you will find the atmosphere and charm of yesteryear. Stroll through the Garavan district (between the old town and the Italian border), where luxury hotels were built by the notables and the upper European middle class who came down on the Riviera for holidays. Menton (ancient possession of the Grimaldi) was a popular seaside among the crowned heads. They moved to their summer residence in Menton and liked to mix together with other rich people. For those who come to the Coast in winter, do not miss the famous Lemon Festival which animates the city for 3 weeks between February and March. Along the PROMENADE OF THE SUN by the sea, floats built and decorated with citrus scroll on a different theme each year. The party reaches its peak at the rhythm of Brazilian bands, fanfares, folk groups or cheerleaders, with a new magical parade every night ... one of the most important events on the French Riviera, not to be missed

Located just after Nice, going towards Menton, Eze extends itself on the edge of the sea from Cap Roux to Pointe de Cabuel. Lush vegetation of banana, date, carob, orange and lemon trees testifies to the pleasant climate prevailing here most of the year. The beach of the Bay of Eze is easy to access and shaded by a pine forest down to the sea. The territory of Eze is not limited to the sea; going up the Middle Corniche (N7), you will discover Eze village, this tourist spot is one of the most picturesque villages of the department and is one of the musts to visit (despite the crowd ...). Perched on an eagle's nest at the top of an imposing and beautiful cliff, you will see from afar the village and its pale ocher church. To reach the entrance of the village, you will walk along a small stone path skilfully decorated and polished by the time, giving you a view over the beautiful gardens of the Château de la Chèvre d'Or. Crossing the gate of the village, you will discover a Provencal hamlet full of charm, generously flowered and offering superb panoramas on the sea and the coast. Small alleys of stones, vaulted passageways, beautifully restored stone houses, shady squares, refreshing old fountains, you will go from wonders to wonders, like at a stage set, the village will seem almost false to you, so beautiful it is ! Many small craft shops will solicit your curiosity ... (some look like small caverns carved into the rock). The alleys of the old medieval village are a true testimony of the history of Eze, the two guard towers at the entrance of the village, the postern, the gunboat are classified as historical monuments. You can also visit the exotic botanical garden, located in the village, where an impressive collection of cacti, succulents and rare species surround the remains of an old castle at 400 m altitude at the top of the cliff overlooking the sea. From the village, you can walk to Eze by the sea through the Friedrich-Nietzsche footpath (at the end of the Exotic Garden Avenue), it seems that it is here, under the pines and olive trees that Nietzsche designed the last part of his work "Thus spoke Zarathustra" ... This delightful walk will take you 1 hour ... count maybe a little more to go up! Eze - View of the stars The Upper Corniche will make you discover a superb forest park on approximately 610 hectares. You will visit the House of Nature, the oppidum of the Col d'Eze and do not miss to admire at the fall of the night, the show of the stars as part of the open air evenings of the Astorama. To see, to visit: The chapel of the White Penitents. The parish church and its baroque nave. The cemetery where the famous humorist Francis Blanche rests. The garden of Eze. Visit the Galimard soap and the Fragonard perfume factories. The Friedrich-Nietzsche footpath (Astrorama). The Fort of La Revere (Col d'Eze).

The famous sculptor Cesar has been quoted as saying that “Nice is like a woman city. We love her passionately, we may leave her, but we always return to her”. Nice is indeed the capital of the glorious French Riviera, the perfect resort for sun lovers, with its spectacular coastline during the sunny summer months and mild winters, where you are able to sunbathe, paddle in the azure sea, swim, water ski, parascend, jet-ski, or simply stroll in the fresh early morning air, blissful sun, looking at the calming sea, or even only sip a smooth cocktail. The main tourist attraction in Nice is the PROMENADE DES ANGLAIS, which stretches about 7 km around the Baie des Anges, a favourite "promenade" since the Belle Epoque at the turn of the last century. Always covered with flowers, this wonderful walk looks out onto the beaches on one side, and luxury hotels such as the Negresco on the other. At all hours, people come here to watch the sea, sunbath, jog, cycle and roller skate. There are a variety of water sports available and beach volleyball is the activity of choice of the local youth. On a fine evening, why not have dinner at one of the many restaurants directly on the beach? Nearby you will find Rue de France, the pedestrian shopping street which runs roughly parallel to the seaside. This area is full of shops, including some exclusive clothing boutiques, and restaurants and cafés with outdoor terraces - a great place to sit and watch the world go by, while you eat or drink. One of the most appreciated area of Nice city is the very exclusive Carré d’Or (which means Golden Square), located along Rue de France, near the pedestrian street and sandwiched between four of the most famous streets such as: Boulevard Victor Hugo, Avenue Jean Medecin, Boulevard Gambetta and the world-famous Promenade des Anglais. This area is characterized by superb turn-of-the-century buildings. There is a unique ambiance here that has to be felt to be understood. From Salsa bars to French Brasseries, this area gives a chic European-style terrace-living that suits those who like a more relaxed venue. Have a look at the modern art gallerys that adorn the street, or around the corner join the bustling 'Zone Pieton' and enjoy the shops, bars and cafés, fancy restaurants. There are several very chic bars within walking distance of the Negresco Hotel, that generally serve crudités and excellent wines and cocktails. The ambient atmosphere, together with music and people, that are well behaved, make in all a very pleasant evening. Visitors to Nice also enjoy dining at the restaurants located along the French seaside. Wonderful seafood, French wines and Italian and French cuisine can be enjoyed at many seaside restaurants in this Mediterranean city. On the other hand, the 19th century Palais Massena features impressionist paintings from the Nice school. The palace, located between Rue de France and the Promenade, also contains ceramics and French folk art. The city of Nice has famous beaches along the Promenade, such as the one of the Hotel Negresco, known as Neptune Beach, where you can rent a long chair and have a delicious mojito, admiring in front of you, the emerald or turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea . Naturally, there are many other beaches, such as Hi Beach, which is very fashionable and many, as well as restaurants and cafes.
