Undoubtedly, Salento is one of the most beautiful littles towns in Colombia’s coffee region. It is evident that part of the income of the village comes from tourism and there is a desire to invest that extra money in caring for the local community. In Plaza de Bolívar next to Calle Real, are the most representative buildings of the architecture of Antioquian colonization. Of all the buildings, the church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen is the most outstanding. From this plaza, one can find jeeps that lead to the Cocora Valley.

The Cocora Valley is a nature reserve. Cocora was the name of a princess daughter from the cacique indigenous people and means "water star". Omnipresent in its landscape are the Wax Palms that reach more than 60 meters and live for more than 200 years. It is the tallest plant or tree on the planet and are the only palms in the world that live in altitudes than more than 2,000 meters above mean sea level. It is the national tree of Colombia and is protected since it could be in danger of extinction.

VALLE DEL COCORA One of the most important places in Quindío, is nestled between the Cordillera Central Mountains. It is located about 20 kilometers from the town of Salento. The Cocora Valley is a nature reserve. Cocora was the name of a princess daughter from the cacique indigenous people and means "water star". The church of Salento, originally built in 1850, is a peculiar building because it is made entirely of Ceroxylon wood from the columns to the roof, which is a wood rarely used in construction. At the beginning of the 20th century, the location of the church was changed and the temple was built with two towers; however, after several earthquakes in the 1920s, it was rebuilt with a single tower. Its style is a mixture of Colonial Spanish and Colombian Naif that combine very well.

UN SECRETO MUY BIEN GUARDADO The House of the Hummingbirds is beyond the Cocora Valley. In order to reach it, you have to go up and up and up, climbing 4.8 km. But it's worth it, if you go to Valle Del Cocora, to go up to this magical place! Come early, so you can enjoy the aguapanela with cheese that is included in the entrance fee of $ 3,000 COP (approx) and the house that used to be a cattle farm which is now an area recovered with flora and fauna by expert volunteers. Enjoy this road, where you will find 7 suspension bridges and see the majesty of the Cocoras

Getting there is not easy (you can imagine, given the height it is at, although the entire Cocora valley is above 1,800 meters above sea level). After almost two hours of walking in the valley (of course, stopping to take pictures of the Wax Palms), we get up here and enjoy one of the best views of the whole valley. With luck, while you rest you will see some hummingbirds appear, floating next to the flowers to make the experience complete.

ORGANIC COFFEE This coffee farm is visited every day. After a brief tour of the plantation to show visitors the different types of coffee, one enters the room to begin learning about the selection process: the harvested bean is passed through a machine that removes the skin, the seeds are cleaned, and then they are dried in the greenhouse. To finish, the film that joins the two grains is removed and they can be roasted. One can enjoy organic coffee here, which indeed tastes very good. The coffee farm can be reached on foot from Salento on a beautiful journey.
