Parks & Nature

From tennis courts, to bocce ball, fishing, baseball fields, basketball courts and play grounds, there's always something to do here. It's good for walking, jogging, or just a stroll. And its golf course is on the eastern side of Kissena Park. Although a short course, it features some tight holes and several sneaky hills. Always seems to play harder than most people imagine. Notice the beautiful views of Manhattan. Course has undergone several improvements in past years. They say that the 11th tee is the highest elevation point in Queens. This offers a beautiful view of Manhattan.***Know Before You Go***Q65 to Booth Memorial Ave, Q17 to 164th Street then walk to Booth Memorial Ave. Q88 to 164th Street then walk to Booth Memorial Ave. Parking at Kissena Park Golf Course is ALWAYS free!

Queens Botanical Garden (QBG) is just steps away from our apartment (0.4 miles, a 9-minute walk). Experience the beauty of QBG, the place where people, plants, and cultures meet. Set on 39 acres in theheart of New York City's largest borough, the Garden is an oasis of green space serving our nations's most ethnically diverse county. More then 60 years after its birth as an exhibit at the 1939 New York World's Fair, QBG continues to welcome an international audience with rose, bee, herb, and perennial gardens, changing displays, and public programs accessible to all. The serene space consists of 25 gardens where yoga is allowed but biking and blading are strictly forbidden. Let your kids use their olfactory sense on the Fragrance Walk; the essential oils of the shrubs and flowers there are particularly strong. Make a stop at the Bee Garden, whose plants attract those hardworking, colonizing insects.

This park and the connecting Alley Pond park are amazing, they make up the second largest park in Queens next to Flushing Meadows Corona Park. They also have mountain biking with the North Woods Mountain Biking Trail that has many easy sections for me. If you love jazz, you are steps away from Louis Armstrong's grave and within 2 miles of his home and archives. Despite his international fame and acclaim, jazz legend Louis Armstrong retired to an unpretentious home in a quiet Queens neighborhood, which is now a museum dedicated to the musician. The Louis Armstrong House still stands in Corona, Queens, in much the same condition as when Armstrong and his wife Lucille lived there. No one has lived in the home since the Armstrongs and the interior of the house has been restored and maintained in period style. Many of the original furnishings remain and the artist's music is piped throughout the home as visitors make their way along the tour. There are also recordings of Armstrong talking to friends and practicing trumpet so it's almost as if the jazz great is still haunting his former abode, although the experience is more educational than supernatural. In addition to the preserved rooms, the house features an exhibition cataloguing Louis Armstrong's life and achievements and an ever growing collection of objects related to the musician, donated by family and friends. Even Armstrong's compendious record collection is preserved at the site. The Louis Armstrong House may have been a home to the jazz musician, but now it is a living, talking record. ***Know Before You Go*** Take the 7 train to 103 St-Corona Plaza. Choose the exit on the north side of Roosevelt Avenue, and then take the stairs on your left. Make a right (north) onto 103rd Street. Walk two blocks and make a right onto 37th Avenue. Walk 4 short blocks and make a left onto 107th Street. The Museum is on the left side, 1/2 block north of 37th Avenue.

It contains a very zen atmosphere. Walking around and observing the rock sculptures help to relieve your tension. It restores your mind and soul. The wide space adds to the intimate study of the sculptures. The open garden features an array of rock sculptures that forces you to stop and enjoy the beauty of nature. Citi Field a stadium located in Flushing Meadows Corona Park in the New York City borough of Queens. It's the home baseball park of Major League Baseball's New York Mets. While they haven’t been as successful as their Bronx rivals in recent years, the Mets can certainly be happy about their newish stadium, which opened in 2009. With great sight lines, fun activities for kids and a prodigious selection of food and booze (including Shake Shack and Blue Smoke outposts), even those with the barest interest in the game will enjoy themselves at the park, which in recent years has also doubled as a concert venue with appearances by mega-stars like Paul McCartney and Nas.

A tribute to American animals, opened to the public on June 25, 1992. It was the second of three "city zoos" to be renovated and operated by Wildlife Conservation Society, through a partnership with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. Unlike the much older Central Park and Prospect Park zoos (which were renovated and reopened by WCS in 1988 and 1993, respectively), the Queens Zoo had only existed since 1968. That year, the "Flushing Meadows Zoo" opened on the grounds of the 1964 World's Fair. However, advances in zoo technology and animal management rapidly left the zoo in need of an update. The new zoo is the result of a $16 million reconstruction.

With all the water around New York City, beaches are inevitable. Queens has several beaches around for a variety of water sport interests. Water Taxi Beach (watertaxibeach.com) has picnic spots and DJs at the bar each night. Visitors to the beach can get a good view of the city skyline from the shores of Water Taxi Beach. Rockaway Beach also draws lots of visitors during warm months. Handballers favor this beach thanks to the multiple handball courts available. Surfers also enjoy catching waves at Rockaway Beach. Jacob Riis Beach draws less crowds than the other beaches, which may be just the thing some visitors prefer. This white-sand beach has several different courts for sports, such as handball, volleyball and basketball.

Hop the Q28 bus to Queens Archery to partake in the age-old tradition of shooting stuff with a bow and arrows. Both news and skilled archers are welcome at this indoor sports hall. $20 gets you an hour of equipment rental, an intro lesson and a sense of derring-do that could come only from playing Robin Hood.
