Shopping

Antique shopping is a serious business in Denver. South Broadway is known for its exceptional wares. I have sleuthed some of my favorites, and Somewhere in Time (named after the motion picture starring Christopher Reeves & Jane Seymour) is an all time favorite shop to visit. Here you will find reasonably priced (for rare chandeliers) but even more so, you will receive an education. The store's owners and operators BREATHE their craft, and they are happy to show you their piles of boxes where they retrieve miscellaneous "junk parts" and turn them into treasures. Obviously, if you're traveling you might not actually purchase a chandelier during your trip- but don't miss the experience!

Local vendors' one stop shop of curios, vintage, & antique items. Walking around it is a free and entertaining experience. You might end up with a stuffed suit case on your way out of here- because the price is definitely right on that Robin Hood Men in Tights VHS.

Arts & Culture

This museum brings history to life. Expert archaeologists have teamed up with museum curators to provide experiential and hands on exhibits. Have you ever wanted to touch the artifacts? Have you ever stood their mystified looking at something with no idea of how it was used in history? Have you ever wondered what it was like to walk into an old timey store? This is the place for you- as curators have worked hard to recreate artifacts by the dozen. You get to walk into the old general store and you can even pick up a box of starch! It's the little things!

This is an exceptional museum with an expertly researched and curated permanent exhibit on local history. This is the ultimate spot to get an in-depth indigenous history on the Arapahoe & Cheyenne tribes. If you head to a "dress up room" at the top of the building- take the stairs from the main entrance hall- you can dress up like a bison! Food Scene

This was an old time Boulder, CO, restaurant with a strong reputation as an exciting and interesting experience. It relocated to Lafayette after a developer purchased and consolidated a bunch of buildings in Boulder. So now we get to be within a short drive to exciting food!

Bring elastic waisted pants - as the food here is down home goodness and provides ample portions. Meanwhile the ingredients are quality and craft meats and vegetables from organic and local merchants. The food alchemy here is so spot on- even "super tasters" will enjoy what they eat at reasonable prices. Great atmosphere and fun place to go.

Heritage grains, purchased from local farmers, are the source for the wheat products in this local bakery. For those looking for a meal, they provide breakfast & lunch fare. Check out Restoring Heritage Grains, for more info: https://www.amazon.com/Restoring-Heritage-Grains-Biodiversity-Resilience/dp/1603586709 That I am a history teacher with an undergrad focus in plant biology and agriculture, I also recommend you look up the Mesolithic Natufians (a quick google search will get you there) & the radical transition from paleolithic hunter-gathering to neolithic settlement that occurred in their cities. Eat well while reading about those who made your food & surplus society possible!

After a long & cold fall hike or a winter snowshoe, coming into the warmth of this place feels immeasurably delightful. Find yourself embraced by a comfortable booth and fun bright wall paintings. Steaming chai keeps coming to your table and if you time things right, you can catch the "all-you-can-eat" lunch buffet. The only challenge is making the drive back down from Ned with a full belly and a sleepy vibe- so consider having a designated "food coma" driver.

Ample parking (and free if you park on the North lot) with a bike and hike trail system that will connect you to a vast network of trails. Take a mellow and much beloved hour loop hike OR get out your bike (or sturdy hiking boots) and complete the entire loop that takes you to Superior and then back to Boulder. You can also cross under 93 and check out trails that take you to Eldorado Springs CYN or to the Mesa Trail and beyond.

LOCAL SECRET DAY HIKE/ MODERATE TO LOW TRAFFIC/ "STRENUOUS"- it's definitely long and all uphill one way... if you're not used to altitude, it could be hard for folks. Make sure you're in good fitness & altitude-adjusted before attempting: This fun hike brings you up to a border between Indian Peaks Wilderness and Rocky Mountain National Park. You will see other folks on the trail but nothing like on a more popular route in the area. Options to summit St. Vrain Mountain as well as nearby 13'er Ogallala

LOCAL SECRET Great trail for snowshoeing if you want more solitude and less people around. Ample opportunities to make this into a long day hike as the trail branches off to other more extended trails. Lost Lake is a popular destination in the summer and even for the more sparse snow shoeing crowd. During the winter season you'll need to park on the side of the road and walk about a mile on snowpack or muddy road until you reach the trailhead. Make sure you stop off at Kathmandu in Nederland after your hike- as nothing beats a hot mug of chai and Nepalese food. If you leave extra early, complete a snowshoe and catch the lunch buffet. It's a tradition for me and my trail buddies.

Drinks & Nightlife

Don't be fooled by the word Bar, this place is no dive. It is a swanky, hip, urban enclave for younger folks that enjoy craft beer. Nice selections on tap and a dance floor. The owner completed yoga teacher training with me- so sometimes this nerdy history teacher drops it on the dance floor. Only one person has fainted due to my incredible dance moves.

One of endless bike shops in our area- picked this one to feature as it is new and offers high quality service and customer care. So, if you park at their shopping center, rent a bike, and tour around Boulder for the day you get: free day parking, you're right on a bike path system and within reach of some well known local routes, and you are in good hands. Also, ample space to test out bikes.
