Myddfai community hall is well worth a visit, just five minutes up the hill from North Lodge. Community project and art centre, the hall has a lovely cafe which makes great light lunches and afternoon teas (and we provide the coffee). There is an amazing little shop filled with locally made crafts of a very high standard. The stained glass window in the hall is worth a look, and there is also the story of the Lady of the Lake to read about here.

A hidden treasure - we'd lived here two years before anyone told me there was a little restaurant/cafe in this local gift shop. Go in, and through the shop, and the cafe is inside, partly open and worth the trip. Closed on Tuesdays, but every other day, this is one of the best places for lunch in the area. They make their own crumpets, which are exceptional and the menu is light, clever and modern. The pea and mint fritters are a current favourite!

Yummy! This is the best Thai food we've eaten in a long time and we're happy to drive to Brecon for a meal at Chang Thai. The service is great, the atmosphere is relaxed and always busy and the food is superb. Try some of the options on the menu that are new to you - the staff helped us to select lots of new delicious options.

Delicious food, friendly staff and a very unusual space make this a must-visit. Ideal for lunch, the Welsh Rarebit menu is superb - I recommend all of them! There is a lovely area upstairs where the local art group meet and display their work. The food is a good price, the coffee is excellent and I highly recommend the cakes.

This is an outstanding homewares store; the owner has a wonderful eye, and the shop is filled with beautiful and often locally made furniture, blankets, homewares and just gorgeous things! Highly recommended, you'll be amazed by the value for money. Many of the lamps and pieces of furniture in The Charcoal Hut came from this shop.

I'm a regular customer in Cibola; whether it's for the perfect gift for a friend or something special to wear, this is where I go. The gifts are beautiful from homewares to bags to mirrors to cushions. They stock beautiful linen clothes too - and not just in size 12! Every time I get a good excuse to treat myself or a friend, this is where you'll find me!

The RSPB nature reserve at Gwenffrwd-dinas is a beautiful woodland walk, along by the river. Especially wonderful during the spring when you can see bluebells. The walk does get steep, but is worth every step.

Not for everyone, this is a tough walk and well worth the effort it you're able. A friend recently climbed to the top and said it was worth the blisters for the amazing views; on a clear day you can see for miles. Friendly and often plenty of walkers on the route.

The only butcher in Wales to hold the Royal Warrant, this is a fabulous family butcher. Their meat is all local and prepared on the premises. The handmade pork pies are the best you'll ever find! Perfect place to buy your barbecue feast!

Tea and coffee are included in the daily fee, as is the use of a high speed connection to the internet. I use the space regularly and find it friendly, quiet enough to get work done and bright and airy too.

Getting Around

2018 marks the 150th year of the Heart of Wales line - and our wonderful Llandovery station (5 minutes drive or around 20 minutes walk from North Lodge) is a real gem. The train comes through twice in the morning and twice in the afternoon and everyone is very friendly. The station hosts art exhibitions from local artists and has a lovely tea room too.
