A greasy spoon diner in a city full of greasy spoon diners worth talking about. J&J’s isn’t the one you’ll see on TV, though. A true family-owned joint that sits atop the city’s historic Mount Washington. Assorted coffee mugs that don’t match. Serving sizes that’ll last you all day. A dining experience that makes you feel like family.

Don’t play around. Don’t walk in here and start getting precious about your Instagram picture—people will look at you funny. Just order a beer and a burger and keep your mouth shut. Listen. Coop de Ville has eight lanes of duckpin bowling, along with pinball, arcade games, ping-pong, pool tables and even a lounge with comfy couches and a little library. (They also have a full-time designated cleaner whose job is to constantly disinfect games and high-touch surfaces, if you’re wondering). Fried chicken is the star here, which makes the Strip’s recent loss of Chicken Latino sting a little less. You can get white or dark meat or a half-chicken with spices like Garlic Parm and Nashville Hot, and sauces like Hot Honey and Roasted Garlic Ranch. Most of these flavors are available as sandwiches, including the Korean-inflected K-Town, with gochujang mayo and fermented pickles. They’ve also got a full coffee bar.

Their Matcha Pistachio Croissants demonstrate an adept hand at pastries, as do the Glazed Brioche Doughnuts. Run by the folks behind Josephine’s Toast in the original incarnation of Smallman Galley, The Speckled Egg has a sense of humor, too. The Millennial is, of course, avocado toast (which has become a meme), that can be garnished with bacon, lox, sausage or crab. There are standout standards like the Brown Butter French Toast. They also have a full-service coffee bar and offer energizing juice blends from Pittsburgh Juice Co. and really unique cocktails. Some examples: the Vespa Yinz with Boyd & Blair Potato Vodka, Ginzer Gin and Axta White Vermouth, and the Pittsburgh is a Zombie Town, with Cazadores Reposado Tequila, local Maggie’s Farm Rum, grapefruit and cinnamon, among other things.

Pita My Shawarma started out as a food truck, which did well enough to warrant a storefront on Butler Street in Lawrenceville selling Lebanese and modern Mediterranean food. Held together by the best pitas in Pittsburgh — freshly made from Pitaland in Brookline — they specialize in classics like the Falafel Wrap and the Chicken Shawarma with rotisserie-cooked shaved chicken drizzled with garlic sauce. They make their own Hummus and Baba Ganoush Dip, and throw in a few curveballs like Halloumi Cheese Fries — basically, deep-fried halloumi cheese sticks with chili paste dipping sauce. Even the fries are spiced distinctively, with sesame and Za’atar seasoning

Remember when we could go on vacations to tropical places, and it was no big deal? Yeah, not happening anytime soon. Still, you can get a taste of the islands (for much less money) at this great new Jamaican joint in Sharpsburg. That means things like Fried Plantains, Beef Patties, spicy hot Jerk Chicken, Curry Chicken and Seafood Fritters. For a bigger family-sized meal, you can get the Oxtail Dinner or even the traditional Goat Dinner in a Brown Stew or Curry. It’s a welcome addition to the neighborhood, which is changing fast.

This isn’t your grandma’s spaghetti. Alta Via’s take on the meal includes lemon, prosecco, uni butter, pine nuts and bread crumbs. The sauce on the rigatoni boasts two different kinds of tomatoes — one acidic, the other sweet — and is complemented by roasted garlic, fresh basil and Parmigiano Reggiano cheese. If bread is your carb of choice, dip into a whole eggplant, roasted in the wood-fired oven and drizzled with Calabrian chili, lemon and olive oil. Dinner is served seven nights a week, with brunch and lunch offerings coming later in the spring. Fuller says there will be daily off-menu specials to give the kitchen staff room to have fun and experiment. The overall menu will change monthly as local produce becomes more available.

When you visit Pittsburgh’s Little Italy, you expect to find good pizza. Angelo’s, in operation since 1976, doesn’t disappoint. Whether you stop in for a single slice — available in Boardwalk Traditional, White or Sicilian — or go full circle, the fresh ingredients, chewy crust and flavorful tomato sauce will leave you saying, “delizioso!” Angelo’s was highly recommended by many readers in the comments section of our top pizza places in Pittsburgh article.

They’re offering a just-elevated-enough approach that makes everything better than it probably needs to be. Jimmy’s signature meatloaf is the centerpiece here. But the bite-sized buffalo cauliflower is a nice surprise, as are the snacking-ready Arancini. The Frick Park Tavern also features a thoughtful and interesting cocktail list.

t’s the fluffy bao that really sets Mola apart. These soft steamed buns are like an entire meal in one dumpling. The pork belly, for instance, has a rich array of textures and flavors, with peanuts, pickled cucumber and cilantro, and the crispy chicken has slaw and Sriracha mayo packed inside. East Liberty is quickly becoming the best place for lunch in Pittsburgh, so watch for Mola’s lunch specials, which can pair sushi and/or bao with sides like Spicy Crab Salad or Seaweed Salad

The South Side was once among Pittsburgh’s premier destinations for great food; the new Bonfire is making a case for it once again. This multilevel restaurant from chef Chris Bonfili (Avenue B) has brunch options ranging from the familiar (chicken and waffles with greens, pickles and hot honey) to the offbeat, like the breakfast calzone. Other winners include the spiced French Toast with rum, bananas and walnuts and the ginger BBQ pork belly, served with grits, kimchi, peanuts and scallions. This shop, packed to the rafters with art and antiques, also has a nice little café inside. It’s known for sending Pittsburgh’s vegan/vegetarian community home with full bellies — and often with some cool vintage stuff as well. The menu changes weekly, including dishes like vegan portobello mushrooms stuffed with spicy chipotle mashed potatoes, and a vegan smokey maple seitan sandwich. But the dessert table may be the main draw. These vegan desserts are definitely not pale imitations of their buttery cousins, so indulge. And along with the food, everything in the room — from the lamps to the charmingly mismatched tableware — can be purchased. Brunch is served Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m

Visit Supper on Penn for great bar food, including the seitan gyro (with homemade seitan) and the poutine, which might be the richest, most over-the-top take on this dish ever. Distance: About three miles Go: Highland Park offers fun year-round, and this loop is no exception, with a mix of dramatic architecture, wildlife and stands of trees. Level of difficulty: Moderate Highlights: Try the loop around Reservoir 1, which was built in 1879 to provide public drinking water. The area grew into a popular gathering spot, and about two decades later, the City of Pittsburgh created Highland Park. Grand architecture is showcased throughout the park. The welcome sculptures at the Highland Park entrance are the work of artist Giuseppe Moretti, who lived in Pittsburgh from 1916-24.
