Champagne-focused. Need I say more? Great selection and a nice alternative to beer chugging.

Picked Blue Nile just because it's the one that came to mind on Frenchmen Street. There are so many great ones within a block.

Actually two gay bars (straight-friendly), the downstairs Bourbon Pub and the upstairs Parade dance club. A starting point for many gay visitors.

Doesn't get much more "hole in the wall" than this one. Just around the corner from the house, it's a NOLA classic with cheap drinks and heavy pours.

Inside the Monteleone Hotel. The bar rotates and is decorated like a carousel, so there's that. It features good drinks and pleasant staff and you can even sometimes spot famous people here.

It's loud, boisterous, and touristy. And many patrons are staggeringly drunk by the end of the evening. But it's still a must do, especially if you've never had a Hurricane cocktail.

Our favorite wine bar and it's in the heart of the French Quarter. Nice complementary (not complimentary!) food items to pair with your beverage.

Neighborhoods

The "coolest" of all NOLA neighborhoods, in our opinion. Even though it's become a rather expensive destination, it's still bohemian and counter-culture in its own way. Frenchmen Street music clubs are great, too, even post-pandemic!

The jewel of New Orleans and the oldest neighborhood in the city. It's the most visited and is world-famous. Yeah, it's a little touristy but there are some good shops on Chartres, Royal and Decatur streets mixed in with the strip clubs, loud bars and CVS locations. Great neighborhood for architecture, too, as it's heavily policed as to what you can/can't do.

A couple of miles straight up Esplanade Avenue from the house, BSJ is one of our favorites. In fact, we lived here for ten years. The area is beautiful on its own but also has the bayou (big plus) snaking through it. Jazz Fest is held at the Fairgrounds each year and there are several good restaurants and bars in the area. Just north is City Park with the sculpture gardens, miles of trails, NO Museum of Art, and more.

Food scene

Amazing food by Chef Susan Spicer, who's a staple in New Orleans. While everything on the menu is pretty great, the PB&J (duck w/ cashew butter and pepper jelly on a buttery toast) is amazing if not a tad heavy!

We always love the fresh italian food at "the Barrel" and it never disappoints. Not as touristy as many other FQ restaurants, either.

One of our favorites in New Orleans. Beautiful dining space and great service with creative food to match. It's one of the new "see and be scene" places in NOLA and it doesn't disappoint. $$$

Of all the restaurants by Emeril Lagasse, Meril is our favorite. It's casual (wear your shorts!) and has great menu items with shareable sizes. Good service, too...that's an Emeril trademark.

One of the "grand dames" of New Orleans restaurants and one of our favorites. You will need a jacket, guys, but it's worth the effort. A New Orleans classic in the beautiful Garden District.

Museums and Culture

Probably the most popular museum in New Orleans, this is America's official WW2 museum. It takes a full half-day to do justice and some would say even longer. A must-do.

Samgöngur

(1) Walk daytime and (2) Uber/Cab late-night.

It sounds easy and it's common sense. New Orleans is a large, diverse city and there are thousands of tourists in the French Quarter area on any given day. Protect yourself by not flashing money, expensive jewelry, phones, etc. Also, get a ride home at night. It's a few bucks.
Hvað á að taka með

Shorts year-round, may need coats/jackets Nov-Feb.

Jacket (sports coat) for guys if you want to go to Commander's Palace or Galatoire's. Otherwise, leave it at home.
