There are many delicious food venues in the area. These are a few favourites that are close to the roost - 5 to 15 minute drive. Enjoy!!!
I can't say enough good things about this quaint, family-run business. The food is authentic and delicious. It's affordable for the whole family. Dine in, outside on the patio or take with you. They are open everyday from 11am to 6pm except Sundays.

We'll need to give your directions to Kaolin pond, although it is located on the Shawnee Hills Forest Map(USDA Forest Services) if you have one. It's a great swimming hole and has a hiking trail. Nice spot for a picnic as well. A former clay pit, there are still pockets of clay in the pond that you can dig up and shape. Water is about 35 deep in the former clay quarry.

Now named Cache Bayou Outfitters, our friends Mark or Camea are great guides for trips on the Cache River and for the area in general. Call and book a reservation for a canoe/kayak and do self-guided or guided. I recommend guided!

Helpful review: "Nice Loop. Fun rock formations, couple creek crossings, good variety. Poor trail markings. The first part is fine follow it across the creek and up the next hill, you will come to a marker telling you to turn left to the rock formations.... In a short distance down the hill you will come across the rock formation...continue north, down the hill on the established trail, you will come to the creek again, cross it and stay on the trail, (you may see a sign that says panther den with an arrow telling you to turn right, ignore it) follow the creek, crossing it again, the trail heads up the hill to the left, which shortly heads back south towards the trail head..." Follow signs.

Arts & Culture
Small town museums are interesting to those who like that kind of thing. This museum also has a gift store attached that raises money for the museum. A separate building holds the Historical & Geneological Society where they often hold art exhibits and other local displays and presentations. Cobden originally had a People's Market where local growers brought their fruit, veggies, flowers, milk etc to be bought and then shipped via train to Chicago. It all happened in Cobden. Locals say "All roads lead to Cobden" and you'll note there are many ways to get in and out! The Museum & gift shop are open 1pm to 5pm Saturday and Sunday or Friday by chance or appointment.

The whole Makanda Boardwalk is a must visit. Make sure to ask where the Rainmaker's Garden is as the entrance is hidden. Little shops on the boardwalk, a yoga studio with massage, plus other artists located nearby or across the tracks. Renascence house often has events as does the town itself - known for Vulturefest and famous for being the crossroads of the 2017 Eclipse(longest point of duration) and again in 2024.

Makanda Boardwalk has funky shops and made it to the list of best "hippie towns" and is well-known for it's annual Vulture Fest. The small town was made especially famous as the center and longest duration for two eclipses in 2017 and again in 2024. Shops have local art, some of it being made right on the spot by longtime residents. Makanda Trading Post is a favorite selling international wares chosen by the owner in his travels. Healing Traditions offers yoga and massage. Things are often happening but you have to go down and see. Ask to see the Secret Garden :)

Beautiful zinnia and sunflower fields, pumpkin patches and of course, orchards, make this a "must stop" for orchard and flower lovers. Seasonal events, a June to October market and plenty of photo ops. Five generations and still going strong, maybe stronger :)
