City/town information

Olde Town Arvada and Nearby: Exactly 1.4 miles south of our home, at the intersection of Old Wadsworth Blvd and Ralston Road, is the beginning of Olde Towne, which features a collection of shops, breweries and restaurants. It’s not at all uncommon to find festivals, farmer’s markets and other activities in this fun area where the streets are largely blocked to vehicle traffic. We like: Yak and Yeti, 7803 Ralston Rd, a quirky multi-roomed house-turned brewpub serving top-notch Indian food and locally brewed beer Schoolhouse Kitchen, 5660 Olde Wadsworth Blvd, a bar with pub-style food in a schoolhouse-like environment Teocalli, 5770 Olde Wadsworth Blvd, pricier than average Mexican fare but also very, very good Breadwinner’s Cafe, 7311 Grandview Ave, simple, inexpensive diner. No frills but big menu of traditional fare. Good for breakfast. Denver Beer Co., 5768 Olde Wadsworth Blvd, good beer. Food truck on-site. Outdoor seating. What more could you want? Note: On the south end of Olde Town, you’ll find the light rail with stops all along, inside and around Denver.

Neighborhoods

Downtown Denver: If you take the rail to Union Station, the last stop on the train, you’ll be in the heart of downtown Denver. Here’s a fun route: Head west and you’ll quickly find the 16th Street Mall. From here, both directions are good to explore: Head north, over the Millenium Bridge, through Commons Park, over the South Platte River on the Highland Bridge, and find yourself in the bustling Highlands neighborhood. Check out Forest Room 5 for a drink, dinner at El Five for views of the city, or get a scoop at the popular stand Little Man Ice Cream Head south along the 16th Street Mall at Union station and you’ll reach Denver’s lower downtown, known locally as LoDo. Take a right on Larimer and you’ll find one of the oldest blocks in Denver – Larimer Square, where hip used clothing shops, bars and delicious restaurants await. We love Rioja, a Spainish-Mediterranean restaurant but couldn’t afford to go there as much as we’d like. Not far away is Rhein Haus, a huge German-style beer hall featuring unique brews, sausages, housemade pretzels and indoor bocce courts. Let us know if you try a place you love. We are still learning and exploring all the great places.

South Broadway: Known to locals as SoBo, this is a grittier area of Denver. Punch Bowl Social is a blast with good food, an arcade, bowling lanes, karaoke, events and, of course, a selection of punch. La Rumba is a great spot for salsa dancing and mojitos. Dance classes start at 8 and the dance floor opens at 9 on Thursday–Saturday. There are lots of fun shops, bars and restaurants down this strip that are great to explore in the daytime or at night.

Sante Fe Art District: A lengthy and historic stretch of art galleries. First Fridays of the month can be especially fun. Be sure to stop by the Denver Art Society to see my work :).
