Delicious seasonal and local food. Cracking breakfasts - either the full scottish or the porridge. Note don't do both at one sitting..

Wee pub - hidden away from the bustle of things off the Royal Mile. Real ales, malts, pub grub, occasionally a bit of busking.. my kind of pub.

Our local. Haggis, stovies, beer. In the summer sit outside on the cobbles and take in the atmosphere.

Ok it's a bit spartan inside but the delicious vietnamese food keeps me coming back. Note its BYOB (bring your own bottle) as not licensed to sell alcohol. Corkage charge is fair.

A bit of a walk and looks unexceptional from the outside but these guys certainly know their meat! They butcher the meat and the steaks are exceptional.

The only place on my guide that I haven't been too.. but by all reports it's worth going to. Tried to book into the roof top bar but no luck.. apparently has prime views of the castle.

Take in the city views and look across to Fife and on a good day up towards the Ochils, Trossachs and Pentlands. An ancient volcano slap bang in the middle of the city. Steep scramble towards the end!

An island you can walk to at low tide.. check tide tables on line to avoid getting stranded. Lots of interesting stuff in Cramond too.. a roman fort, traditional Scottish architecture and a beautiful walk up the River Almond.

Return to the 17th century... probably the best preserved close off the Royal Mile. For Outlander fans site of the 'Print Shop'.

Entering Gladstone's Land today is like entering a time machine that transports you back to an age before the development of the New Town, to a time when rich and poor lived cheek-by-jowl in a seriously overcrowded city.

One for a summer laze on the grass or a well wrapped up stroll from the Grassmarket via Kings Stables Road to the gardens. Used to be a loch until drained in the 18th century.

Calton Hill rises beyond the east end of Princes Street and carries a rather eccentric collection of buildings and monuments. Its principal attraction is the superb panoramic view, taking in pretty much the whole of Edinburgh. Robert Louis Stevenson said that Calton Hill was the best viewpoint in the city as from it you could see both Edinburgh Castle and Arthur's Seat, something you couldn't from either of them.

Leith is a buzzing port district, home to hip creatives and longtime locals. Waterfront seafood bistros and traditional pubs dot the Shore area. The Royal Yacht Britannia, a former ocean-going royal residence, showcases elaborate state apartments and an onboard Rolls-Royce.

40 minutes on the train and your in the heart of Scotlands largest city... Glasgow. A bit edgier and not quite as tourist orientated... a shopping mecca. Locals like 'the banter' and are surprisingly cheery given how wet the place usually is.
