People pour in from all over Denver for concerts at the massive four-year-old amphitheater, Levitt Pavilion. An older man, with a walker, ambles through a parking lot that has been shut off to traffic. Parents teach their children to ride their bikes in the empty lot; once they know how, they might join the daredevils zipping around the dirt mountain-bike course in warmer months. Skiers and sledders slide down the massive slope when it snows, kids play at the playground, and green thumbs from Moe’s southwest Denver neighborhood tend the community garden, growing new friendships along with plants.

The area has a Rockwellian feel, with its lush landscaping, awning-covered storefronts and family-friendly atmosphere. Washington Park itself has two lakes, two formal flower gardens, tree-lined paths and seemingly endless expanses of green grass. It's a fitness mecca for Denverites, and on any given day you're likely to spot people walking their dogs, running, biking, paddle boating or doing yoga.

Cultures blend in historic Five Points, one of Denver's oldest and most diverse neighborhoods. The district was known as the "Harlem of the West" because it was a frequent stop for jazz greats including Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis, who played clubs like the Rossonian and the Rainbow Room. The neighborhood was also mentioned repeatedly in Jack Kerouac's "On the Road." Today, historic Five Points' creativity and vibrancy live on in a fascinating fusion of old and new. Visitors can stop in at innovative coffeehouses and craft breweries, visit museums telling stories from the past, experience live music from all genres at independent music venues or eat at beloved soul food and barbecue institutions.

Once the third-largest town in Colorado, Georgetown is now home to slightly more than 1,000 residents. But on weekends, its capacity overflows with visitors who want to shop, sightsee, have lunch or spend the night at a Victorian bed-and-breakfast inn. You'll find artifacts from the era preserved at the Hotel de Paris, now a museum, and see how the well-to-do lived at the historic Hamill House Museum. The Georgetown Loop Railroad is a major attraction here, and takes visitors on a round-trip narrow-gauge steam train ride from Georgetown to nearby Silver Plume and back, with an optional stop for a tour of the Lebanon Silver Mine. Back in Georgetown, the Capital Prize Mine takes you on a tour 1,000 feet underground.

Nature lovers and groups enjoy environmental diversity on several hiking trails ranging from mild to moderate. The trails range from .5 to 4 miles and can be combined for longer journeys. The winding Cherry Creek flowing along the canyon floor provides wonderful rest stops. Pets, on a leash, are welcome on most trails, except the new East Canyon Preservation Area trail.

Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, to be exact. Once serving as farmland to the early settlers, this huge tract of land to the city’s northeast (15,000 acres), has been conserved for wildlife. Prior to receiving that status in 1980, it had been used by Shell and the US Army for the production of chemicals, making it quite the rewilding success story. The mixture of prairie, woodland and wetland is home to American buffalo, coyotes and mule deer, among other wildlife. You might also get lucky and spot another North American natural icon, and USA’s national bird: the bald eagle.

Adams Mystery Playhouse is Colorado’s first and only theatre dedicated to murder mystery dinners! A night out at the mansion is sure to provide some laughs, a belly full of good food, and wonderful experiences. The evening opens with a welcome drink in the Victorian parlor rooms, a scavenger hunt that introduces you to a couple of characters, then into the dining room for a buffet meal and a great murder mystery. Herman’s Hideaway is the brainchild of father and son duo Herman and Allan Roth. For 56 years and running, the former lounge has become of Denver’s premier music venues. Herman Roth bought Cunningham Lounge or what’s known now as Herman’s Hideaway back in 1962. It first served as a restaurant in the ’40s and 50’s before Herman made it a shot-and-beer joint. Today there are several shows a week in this popular venue 1 block from the house.

Traveling around Denver and surrounding areas

Public transportation is the cheapest way to get around Central Denver. There are close train stations and bus routes just steps from the home that will get you to all the best neighborhoods. However, if you wish to visit outside of central Denver, you will need to rent a car to visit the beautiful mountains and surrounding towns except for Boulder. You can reach Boulder (University of Colorado) by taking the bus from Union Station downtown. You can also reach historic Golden by light-rail train. You will still need to take a bus from Golden station to downtown. Worth the trip!

Skip the slopes and go snowshoeing!

Many come to Colorado for the great skiing which there are plenty, but few take advantage of the quiet beauty and serenity of snowshoeing. You can rent snowshoes from several places in Denver and drive up to great hikes in the nearby mountains for half the money and far fewer people. A few suggestions are Saint Mary's Glacier, Silver Dollar Lake, and Echo Park lake. Visit REI store downtown to rent gear.

Sample local beers

Denver is all about craft beers and the experimental flavors that distinguish these brews from your typical mass-produced beer. The city is stocked full of craft breweries, so there is no shortage of choice, but in LoDo, you’ll find a concentration of good places to visit. When the craft beer revolution started to take off, LoDo was at the center and Denver quickly came to be known as the ‘Napa Valley of Craft Beer’! Most brewpubs in the city offer tasters of the various ales, lagers and pilsners on sale, and a hearty meal for when hunger strikes. Each craft brewery has a different style tha
