Our Favorite Eats

These are favorite places that my family likes to eat. Keep in mind that we don't typically like to wait long or have to dress up while we are on vacation.
When you want to get away from the tourist areas and crowded restaurnts, The Woodshed Restaurant is a great choice. It is a family restaurant run by a teacher. She teaches hospitality to students in a local high school to prepare them for jobs in the Gatlinburg area so you will see lots of teens working there. There is no need to dress up which is also a plus and the prices are reasonable. You may even spot some of the people in the reality tv series Moonshiners. They work in the area and stop by often to eat. It is only open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

If you want to try Southern food, Paula Deen's Family Kitchen is a great place to go. We usually do the family style option which includes dessert. We love the fried chicken and catfish. This restaurant is in The Island in Pigeon Forge. There is no call ahead seating so be prepared to wait. We usually put our names in as soon as we get to restaurant and walk around the shops at The Island until they text us that a table is ready. Lunch is easier to get in and a couple of dollar cheaper. Be sure to come hungry for this one. They are open until 10 pm Sunday thru Thursday and 11pm on Friday and Saturday.

Crockett's is a family favorite breakfast. It is not your typical bacon and eggs. They have lots of options and their griddle cakes and skillets are amazing and so big! You will want to join their online wait list before coming. They are open from 7am-1pm.

Fannie Farkle's has been in Gatlinburg for as long as I can remember. It is a game room, but they serve the famous Ogle dog(a corn dog), cheese steaks, and sausage subs that they cook with windows open right on the strip. It is great for a cheap and quick lunch.

This place is a definite must for ice cream. They have unique flavors like Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Fruity Pebbles, and Lavender Honey that rotate during the season. They also have a dairy free Dole Whip. You can sit inside or outside in rocking chairs to enjoy your dessert. Also, there are corn hole games on the deck that you can use. The Ogle General store is right beside it and worth taking a look in.

The Peddlar Steakhouse is a Gatlinburg tradition since 1976. Their steaks are naturally aged, never-frozen, and grilled over real Tennessee hickory charcoal. Although their steaks are wonderful, their amazing salad bar sets them apart and is included with every entree. They do have seating where you can view the Little Pigeon river while dining. You can check out their menu at Peddlargatlinburg.com. Because of the popularity of this restaurant, you may want to call ahead to check wait times.

About 45 minutes from the chalet, Bush Brothers(think Bush's baked beans) has a restaurant, museum, and a company store. The restaurant features home cooking and southern recipes. They start you off with a sample of their beans. Their pinto bean pecan pie is a must have for dessert. The museum is small but worth the visit to see how the company started and how they run their factory today. Don't forget to take a picture with Duke! The factory store is a great place for souvenirs. We really enjoyed our time checking it out.

Do you love pancakes? This is the place for you! Log Cabin Pancake House has been family owned since 1976. The restaurant is located just behind the convention center in downtown Gatlinburg. They have their own parking so no need to pay for it. There is no call ahead seating so you may have to wait in a line, but it moves pretty fast. Our favorite pancake dish is the Pancake Royale - their old fashioned pancakes topped with bananas and their famous Royale syrup(a combinaton of syrup and cream cheese). It is like eating banana pudding. We usually split a traditional breakfast with bacon and eggs and split the pancakes too. Their staff is so friendly and the restaurant has 2 big fireplaces to warm it up in the winter. The prices are reasonable too.

Litl Donut Shop is new to Gatlinburg and at the end of the strip but worth the walk. They make mini donuts right in front of you and then you choose the glazes/toppings you want on the donuts. Most of the glazes were made with bits of real fruit - the blueberry glaze was amazing! We were planning to take them back to the chalet, but did not make it out of the store. It is family owned and the family is so sweet. It almost all 5 star reviews.

Our Favorite Hikes

We love to hike and the Smoky Mountain National Park is a great place to explore. Below are some of our favorites. Download the All Trails app for more places to hike. The trails on the app are rated for difficulty and have lots of great info. to find the best trail fit for you!
The Clingmans Dome hike is a must do hike in the Smoky Mountain National Park. It is the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The trail to the top is a half mile paved surface that goes straight up hill. It can be challenging so take your time because the views are worth it. This hike is very popular so parking may be an issue. We usually take the first free space we see. Be sure to bring water. It is amazing!

Things we like to do

We definitely have not tried all the many things things there are to do in the area, but here are a few of the things we like. We will update as will continue to visit our chalet.
There are lots of great places to play mini golf in the area, but we love Davy Crocketts. The courses are challenging and the decorations on the golf course are so cute. Most of the time, someone in our party leaves with a free game by getting a hole in one on the last hole.

This is by far our favorite part about having a chalet in Gatlinburg. The Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited in the country and best of all it is FREE!! Pack a lunch and check it out. Clingsman Dome, Chimney Tops, Alum Caves Bluffs, and Rainbow Falls are a few hikes worth checking out. Stop by the Sugarland welcome center for more information and check with a ranger to see the best viewing area for the elk. Also, we recommend downloading Gypsy Guide's Great Smoky Mountains audio tour. For just $12.99 you can ride through the park at your leisure with an audio guide helping you find the best spots to stop. The tour also includes Cades Cove. It is definitely worth the money!

Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail twists and turns for six miles, forming a one-way looping scenic drive through the Great Smoky Mountains. The narrow roadway only allows cars—trucks, trailers. Unfortunately, RVs cannot fit on this road. Drive along the road and immerse yourself in the mossy green rocks and boulders as you gaze at the water rushing through the mountains. If you like to gamble, Harrah's Cherokee Casino is located in the middle of the town. Hiking trails, rafting, shopping and more make this a great place to visit for the day. Of course the Biltmore is the main attraction especially during Christmas, but Asheville has a great art scene, lots of unique restaurants, and some beautiful places to hike. It is definitley worth drive to spend a day.

Douglas lake is just about an hour away from the chalet in Dandridge, TN. If you like to fish, the lake has been named one of the top five lakes in the United States for crappie fishing and ranks in the nation’s top 10 for large mouth bass fishing. There are several marinas in the area that rent pontoons, ski boats, wave runners, kayaks, paddleboards, and more. If you decide to go, make sure you check out Bush's Brothers(see under restaurants) for lunch!

We have not done this yet, but we really want to check it out. The Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary is just over 2 hours away from the chalet. It was established in 1896 and continued operating until 2009. The prisons’ grounds inside the venue are now part of the Barkley Marathons(check out the documentary about this). Brushy was not just in jail, but for decades, it was a coal mine for the state of Tennessee, originating in the wake of a labor battle. It is also known as being the prison which housed James Earl Ray, the assassin of Martin Luther King Jr. Tours are self-guided and former prison guards and former inmates will be nearby to answer any questions or share a brief story. You can eat at the Warden's Table restaurant(open 10:30 am-7pm Thursday-Sunday) and visit their gift shop. There is also a paranormal tour for the braver people in your group.
