Located in the Keene Valley area about 48 miles/50 minutes from our home, Mount Marcy is the highest of the High Peaks, and its impressive presence commands the view from many other peaks. The following information is from https://www.lakeplacid.com/hiking/mount-marcy: The Lowdown The shortest route to its cone-shaped summit is from the Adirondack Loj parking area. Don't be fooled by the relatively low mileage of this hike — this is a steep, serious climb, especially during the last mile, which ascends the summit on open rock. Parking The shortest and most popular route leaves from the High Peaks Information Center parking lot, near Adirondack Loj. There is a parking fee to use this large lot. Leave Lake Placid on Route 73, turn right on Adirondack Loj Road, and follow it to its end. Pay the fee at the booth, even if no one is inside. The Trail This is the big one! Mount Marcy is the tallest mountain in New York. While not technically challenging, it offers plenty of varied terrain, making for a very long day. The summit's massive rock dome boasts some of the best views in the northeast. Be sure to tread lightly, though, as Marcy is home to endangered alpine vegetation. Only walk on designated paths and stay on open rock at all times. Mount Marcy in Winter Mount Marcy is a challenging mountain that should only be attempted by experienced hikers, especially in winter. Snowshoes are a must for much of the route, and snow spikes or crampons are necessary to climb the exposed upper reaches of the peak. Plan on the temperature in the higher elevations being at least 20 degrees colder than in the valley, not including the wind chill. Bring several extra non-cotton layers, a headlamp with spare batteries, extra food, a windbreaker, goggles, face mask, and supplies for spending the night in case of emergency. https://www.lakeplacid.com/hiking/mount-marcy

Always check with the individual restaurant first before going there. Over the past few years of the health pandemic and the resulting staffing shortages, some have had to change their days and hours of availability.

Casual family restaurant 10 minutes away on Main Street in North Creek. As stated on their website: "Marsha's Family restaurant is a FUN restaurant ...nothing fancy, but good solid food. Be sure to try the blueberry pancakes with real Adirondack maple syrup. Yummy! And great people! Along with breakfast, you'll get the latest scoop on what's happening in the Adirondacks from Ed - Lori's dad and Marsha's husband. If it's happening in the Adirondacks (or anywhere in the Northeast, it seems!), Ed will know about it; whether it's trout fishing, skiing, whitewater rafting or where to eat dinner. I go trout fishing in the Adirondacks every year, and always make Marsha's my first stop." Best for lunch/brunch (closes at 3:00 pm) https://www.marshasfamilyrestaurant.com/about%20marshas.htm

One of our favorites! An upscale dining experience a quick 5 minutes away from our home, on Route 29 in Olmstedville. The Owl at Twilight brings approachable fine cuisine to the Adirondack Mountains of New York. The menu, while focusing mostly on Latin American Cuisine, is recognizable and blends many flavors and regions. Enjoy dinner in the comfortable dining room next to the fireplace or outside on the lovely screened-in porch. The quaint bar is perfect too for an after dinner drink or some appetizers. https://www.theowlattwilight.com/

Just a 10-minute drive away in North Creek, Railbiking with Revolution Rail Co. is a fun excursion activity that allows riders to ride the railroad tracks under their own power and explore a section of the Adirondack railroad that never saw passenger traffic. Less slope, best for kids, requires a bus ride: Railbikers can choose between the "North Bridge Run" or "South River Run." The North Bridge Run takes riders on a 7-mile out-and-back trip along the banks of the Hudson River briefly, through the beautiful Adirondack forest canopy, and then over the Hudson on a spectacular trestle bridge before turning for the return ride back to the launch point. Longer ride, leaves from North Creek Rail Station: New in 2020, the South River Run takes riders south right out of the North Creek Railroad Station for an approximately 9-mile out-and-back trip. Riders on the South River Run hug the Hudson River shoreline and enjoy a number of incredible vistas of the Hudson River. Reservations are STRONGLY recommended - check their calendar for current availability. https://www.revrail.com/
