Swimming, Boating & Sunning
LAKE DUNMORE
Lake Dunmore is a freshwater lake nestled on the western flanks of the Green Mountains in Addison County, Vermont. You will hear loons calling at night and may see eagle or osprey circling or fishing. There are perch, pike, small-mouth bass and lake trout (the record fish for the state came from Lake Dunmore). The lake spans the towns of Salisbury and Leicester and has a surface area of 985 acres (3.98 km2).[1] Lake Dunmore is over 3 miles long (oriented north-south) and up to 1 mile wide. The primary source of water is Sucker Brook, which rises in the adjacent Moosalamoo National Recreation Area of the Green Mountain National Forest. The lake is drained by Leicester River, a tributary to Otter Creek, which in turn empties into Lake Champlain.
While the lake can be as deep as 100 feet at the north end, the south end where the house is located is shallow and right by the access point, has an invasive weed called millefeuille. It is harmless to humans but a prolific spreader. You can swim from the dock right across from the house but it is weedy there. For swimming or hanging out and sunning, we recommend heading to Branbury State Park, just 5 miles down the road. It has a sandy beach and excellent swimming.

With a long sandy beach that's great for swimming and kids and parking for the Moosamaloo Natural Recreation Area just down the road, this is a great area for exploring. Hike up past the towering Falls of Lana, plunge in the rock pools of the river above or keep following the logging road on the right up to Silver Lake (also great swimming).
