Stopping at this no-frills cafe is a rite of passage for PCH travelers. The trick is finding a time when a line isn’t snaking out the door into the parking lot. Whether it’s golden fried fish 'n' chips, cups of chowder, lobsters or grilled mahi mahi, a stop at this roadside stand across from the sand is a must for every beachgoer. Order in the little cafe, grab a picnic table on the hill, chow down and watch the waves from your perch.

The parking lot is so coveted at this hidden spot you’ll get charged $40 if you stay more than the allotted two hours, forget to get your parking ticket validated or lose it altogether. On a beach where Gidget once played, you can hit the beach cafe for breakfast, lunch or dinner, but our favorite is grabbing a beer from the bar inside, heading out to the wooden chairs in the sand and relaxing under umbrellas. Check to see if they have peanuts in the big bin by the door, and fill up whatever you have handy — hats, shirts, cups, etc.

Two big things going for this Italian charmer near Zuma Beach: There's an awesome heated patio with views of the beach and there's a wood-fired brick oven. Pizzas range from a classic Napoletana with sauce and cheese to Thai chicken, and chorizo and Alfredo sauce. Pastas, salads and sandwiches round out the offerings.

Malibu native Cisco Adler (son of Lou, half brother of Nic) debuts this new burger shop just in time for the high-summer season at the beach. Set in the Malibu Village complex, burger choices include classic cheeseburgers to ones topped with roasted chiles, crispy onions and Muenster cheese. For the vegan set? Quinoa burgers. For the carb-o-phobic: bun-less options, i.e. bowls.

Having taken over Malibu's beloved breakfast spot Coogie's, which closed after 25 years, restaurateur Nate Heydari had some big shoes to fill. And fill them he did with a more farm-to-table approach to all-day fare, a full bar and that quintessential laid-back beach style both inside and out. Proudly boasting local farm purveyors for ingredients, the menu veers from California chia and acai bowls, omelets and huevos rancheros for breakfast, to small plates like kebabs, penne Bolognese, plus big salads, pizzas and burgers for dinner. It's super-popular with the locals.

Little Dume Beach is in a small east-facing cove near Point Dume in Malibu. It’s popular with surfers when conditions are right, but otherwise is just a scenic beach walk below steep bluffs and multi-million dollar mansions. The only direct access to Little Dume is via a path that begins on Whitesands Place. Unfortunately this gated access is private and only for the nearby residents. The good news is that the public portion of the beach (i.e. below the mean high tide level) can be accessed by anyone willing to walk from Paradise Cove Beach or from Big Dume Beach at Point Dume State Park. The land above Little Dume Beach is privately-owned and has it’s own rules. Guests of residents who are looking for the private gate, turn off Pacific Coast Highway onto Zumirez Drive then immediately go straight onto Wildlife Drive. Follow this road to where it ends and loops back on what is called Whitesands Place. The unsigned wooden gate is at the approximate coordinates 34.01239, -118.79474 (according to Google Maps). Using street-view on Google Maps you can locate the gate (we have provided a picture to help identify it). Do not disturb the adjacent homeowners or trespass on any nearby properties. Non-residents must walk on the sand from adjacent beaches to see Little Dume Beach. Both Point Dume and Paradise Cove are close by so public access is fairly easy, but you must pay to park at those locations.

Big Rock Beach is a narrow rocky beach in Malibu that is under water during higher tides. It is named for the big rock just offshore at the point which often has birds perched on top. Other rocks nearby might have seals sunning themselves above the waterline. Since all California beaches are public below the mean high tide level, Big Rock Beach is always public because the mean high tide level is at the back of the beach. At lower tides the sandy shore is exposed, but this beach is right in front of a long stretch of waterfront homes. If that doesn’t bother you, this is a nice beach walk There is a public gate with access to Big Rock Beach at the address 20000 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu. Unfortunately, there is little public parking at this address. If you park across PCH, be careful crossing the street. There is another public gate just east of the Moonshadows Restaurant at 20356 PCH, but the beach here is very rocky and again only accessible at lower tides anyway.

Malibu Lagoon State Beach is located on the point formed where Malibu Creek ends at the ocean. Here the creek pools up to form Malibu Lagoon and in the winter the beach berm breaches to allow tidal flows which separate the lagoon beach from Surfrider Beach. The beach at the lagoon has a parking lot at the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Cross Creek Road. From this parking lot dirt trails wrap around the wetlands for a nice walk with bird-watching opportunities. Many informative interpretive signs and art structures can be found along this winding path which ends at the sandy beach in front of the lagoon. The Surfrider Beach area of the state beach starts at the lagoon and continues to the Malibu Pier. Surfrider has a separate parking lot at 23200 PCH. Next to this parking lot you’ll find the Adamson House and Malibu Lagoon Museum which is also part of the state park.

Adamson House is located between Surfrider Beach and Malibu Lagoon State Beach. What a great location for a beach house. The Adamson/Rindge family selected this site from a 20 miles stretch for their beach house which was completed in 1929. The house is Spanish and Moorish influenced with extensive colorful tilework (they owned a tile factory), frescoes, leaded windows, ironwork, and unique light fixtures. It has been well-maintained and unchanged from it’s original glory. The garden is beautiful too. Guided tours of the house and garden are offered weekly – see the website for hours. The grounds are open to the public daily. The Malibu Lagoon Museum is adjacent to the house and is included in the entrance fee. Adamson House is designated a National Historic Site and a California State Historic Landmark.

Malibu Surfrider Beach is the popular sandy beach and surfing spot between the Malibu Pier and the Malibu Lagoon. Surfrider Beach is part of Malibu Lagoon State Beach which has another parking lot next to the lagoon just west on Pacific Coast Highway. The name Surfrider suggests good surfing waves for riding, and with a super long right hand break, it’s an accurate name. The Malibu Sport Fishing Pier is a comfortable spot to hang out on with many benches and nice views. Malibu Farm has a restaurant at the entrance to the pier and a cafe at the end of the pier. A sand volleyball court is near the pier and lifeguards are on hand during peak times to watch for kids and swimmers. There are separate swimming and surfing designated areas.

Malibu Pier isn’t one of the longest piers in California, but it is in one of the best locations. West of the pier you can walk for several miles when the tide isn’t high. In that direction you’ll cross Carbon Beach, La Costa Beach, and Las Flores Beach (the latter two are not easily visited from Pacific Coast Highway). East of Malibu Pier is Surfrider Beach where longboard surfers and stand-up paddleboarders play in the mild rolling break. Farther to the east, Malibu Lagoon State Beach offers a unique setting without million dollar mansions behind (although they are never far away in Malibu). The Adamson House and Garden (Tour) between the lagoon and the pier is cool to see when it’s open. Malibu Farm Cafe and Restaurant is at the end of the pier and has healthy food for hungry visitors. Nobu and other restaurants are nearby as well. Parking is available in the lot next to the pier and along PCH.

Visitor activities include volleyball, surfing, stand up paddleboarding, and swimming
This trail follows Big Rock Motorway, a dirt fire road offering grand ocean views from the fire roads that branch off from the motorway, Big Rock Lateral and Budwood Motorway. The fire roads are out and back trails/trips but the ocean views and cool breezes offer a worthy destination at the end of each route. From the PCH, head north on Topanga Canyon Blvd. approx. 4 miles. Turn left (south) onto Fernwood-Pacific, and travel several winding miles up through the community to the ridgeline. Turn left onto Tuna Canyon Road. Travel approx. 1.2 mi. to the dirt pullout that constitutes the trailhead entrance for this lovely park. Note that just south of the park Tuna Canyon Road becomes one-way southbound out to the PCH and can be used to exit the area, but not to travel up to the area from the coast.

Zuma Beach is a Los Angeles county park in Malibu. It is a long wide beach with enough parking spaces for the Superbowl. The main beach at Zuma is about two miles long and doesn’t have any homes between the sand and Pacific Coast Highway – a contrast to many of the Malibu beaches that have homes built right to the high water mark. Zuma Beach is a massive beach with lifeguard stations spaced out on the shore to protect people who risk swimming these waters. Strong rip currents can develop at Zuma Beach so be aware if you want to swim. This is a gradually sloping beach so it’s great for taking off the sandals and walking in the surf. Volleyball courts, picnic areas, restrooms, and concession stands can be found at various spots along the beach. If you don’t wan’t to pay to enter the parking lots, there are spots along the southbound lanes of PCH. The southern part of Zuma County Beach is called Westward Beach and it is easiest to access from Westward Road on Point Dume.

El Matador Beach is one of three beaches within Robert H. Meyer Memorial State Beach. El Matador is the most popular of the three and the closest to Malibu. The parking lots for each beach are well-signed along Pacific Coast Highway in western Malibu. El Matador has a parking lot on the bluff with picnic tables that look out over the Pacific Ocean. A trail descends through unique eroding formations on the face of the bluff then stairs take you the rest of the way to the beach. Beautiful sea stacks are on the beach and in the surf. This is a popular spot to photograph swimsuit models and stunning sunsets. Explore north on the beach to caves and arches in the rocks. The largest cave faces the ocean at the bottom of a huge flat rock that is connected to the base of the bluff. It’s best to visit these natural features at low tide. Continuing your walk north leads to La Piedra State Beach. If you walk south you will pass in front of stunning homes on your way to Lechuza Beach.

Topanga Beach in Malibu, California Share5 Tweet Pin4 9 Shares Topanga Beach is the closest Malibu California beach to Los Angeles. The Eastern Malibu coast faces south and Topanga Beach is at the east end next to the Pacific Palisades neighborhood. Due to the shape of the beach it is popular with surfers. Waves wrap around the sandy point formed by Topanga Creek creating a continuous right break. A lagoon forms where the creek backs up behind the sandy beach. At the west end of the beach is a rotting old steel barrier in the surf. Except at high tide the public beach on the other side is a nice walking route. The massive Topanga State Park is nearby in the Santa Monica Mountains with hiking trails and mountain biking opportunities. The parking lot for Topanga Beach is on Pacific Coast Highway just west of the intersection with Topanga Canyon Boulevard. There are free parking spaces along PCH outside of this lot. Mastro’s Ocean Club Restaurant is right on Topanga Beach at the east end.

The 3.8-mile round trip hike to Escondido Falls begins just off Pacific Coast Highway and goes uphill for 0.75 miles along Winding Way, a paved road that passes extravagant Malibu residences. Do not let the blacktop deter you. The waterfall is well worth the hike’s unconventional start. After gaining almost 200 feet, the road heads downhill and arrives at Escondido Canyon Park, a wooded park that is open for everyone to enjoy. Take the dirt path to the left next to a sign that reads “Edward Albert Escondido Canyon Trail and Waterfall.” The trail descends through a field of fennel and mustard toward a thicket where a small creek flows. Cross it and make a left turn to head upstream into Escondido Canyon. The trail widens and remains fairly level as it passes through forest and fields. In the spring, wildflowers bloom in abundance along the trail. A few creek crossings interrupt your progress. When the water is high, they require a bit of fun rock hopping, but otherwise, they are easy to cross. Over the course of one mile, the trail gradually ascends over 150 feet from a low spot below Winding Way to arrive at Lower Escondido Falls. This fifty-foot cascade transports hikers instantly to the tropics. A mild sulfuric smell is the only detractor from this soothing setting. Have a seat next to the fern-lined falls. For many hikers, Lower Escondido Falls is a fitting destination that can be reached with ease. For those yearning for more and willing to work for it, Upper Escondido Falls is three times as tall and ten times as beautiful. A route to the right of the lower falls provides a way up the steep limestone wall. The path can be tricky to get up, and coming down is a slippery endeavor. Wear proper footwear and dig in for an adventure up to the upper falls. Use the roots for support and make your way upward. A stretch of rope may be available to help with one portion of this steep section of the hike, which gains close to 200 feet of elevation over 0.15 miles to reach the base of Upper Escondido Falls. Catch your breath as the path turns to the left and crosses the creek beneath a cascade above Lower Escondido Falls. Stay on the left bank of the creek from here, passing over roots and boulders to find the impressive upper falls. Upper Escondido Falls is a true treasure. The water pours over a wall of lush green moss and falls some 150 feet before landing in a calm pool. If Escondido Falls has a good flow of water, it is one of the best around.

You take the Solstice Canyon Trail past a ruined house, then head back on the Rising Sun Trail, which takes you up and keeps you facing toward the water. I always like to prepare people for that hike. It’s not hard but it’s hot and the sun is shining right on you. Be sure to wear sunscreen!

Just a block west of the Malibu Country Mart on Pacific Coast Highway is a new shopping center: the Malibu Colony Plaza. And they're not joking about that name. This center is within easy walking distance of the main gate of the famous Malibu Colony, so the stars can just stroll over to pick up a few items if they are in the mood.
