Sometimes a good ol fashioned carvel ice cream is such a great thing. It's super bright in their store so don't forget your sunglasses. We love the flying saucers (in the freezer) as there made with low fat yogurt. Tastes good and makes you feel even better about the treat.

Great Hiking Trails. It's the closest park from our house. There is swimming and boat rentals in summer and into part of the fall. It very fun in winter here as well as they have great groomed trails for x-country skiing, snowshoeing and they have a sledding hills for winter inner tubing. They have a nice little lodge for warming up and getting some snacks and hot cocoa. Fun for all ages, groups, families and couples.

This a fantastic preserve and again is 45 mins away (just outside of New Paltz). Parking can be expensive if you park at the lot below the Mountain House. $20/person. However, the hikes around the resort, the gardens and the trails are worth it. We love x-country skiing here in the winter when the snow is good.

We love this park although it's 45 mins away it has many of our favorite trails. The trails are great for biking, hiking and x-country skiing. Can be busy on the weekends with locals and tourists. After hiking we stop at the local German place and then head home for a hot tub and relaxing evening at the lodge.

CVS

Great small-medium sized grocery store. This market is a step above regular markets although not quite a Mrs. Greens or Whole Foods. They have good quality fish, fresh rolled Sushi, great pesto, soups and all your other grocery needs. Prices are a bit more expensive here but again definitely the closest place to get good fish.

Sunday Antiques out of the Barn. Our local friend sells antiques out of his barn on Sundays. He's an amazing guy, has lots of knowledge about Putnam Valley, is a bit of a musicologist, knows about antiques and has pretty darn good prices. Just down the road from the lodge.

The church is a striking piece of vernacular architecture, devoutly inspired and authentically detailed. The mission church, "the Church of the North American Martyrs", is built like an Iroquois long house, with a barrel-shaped ceiling and false-face masks staring outward to ward off evil spirits. Very unique historical structure just in downtown Putnam Valley. http://www.nytimes.com/1995/02/26/nyregion/memorial-to-martyrs-with-iroquois-ties.html https://www.pinterest.com/pin/321444492125731712/

Ok, it's not culturally specific but you can learn lots about art and culture at Barnes and Nobles and is great for a rainy day excursion when you want to leave the lodge. You can then buy a great book and cozy up at the lodge to read it.
