It's a fun place, a little loud, but only because there are a lot of people laughing and having fun, sharing a meal and some great beers. Offers craft beer, and the daily dinner specials Monday-Thursday and quite a deal and great food. Friendly service.

They grind the grain right there in front of you and use non-gmo, no pesticides, good grains including spelt. It's the healthy bakery in town. Friendly people. They also have lunch items for a quick bite.

Walk up to the deli counter and order your lunch. Go to the alley outside and find a table in the really cool, trendy alley and they will bring your food to you. If you go on a Saturday, you might get to see them roast a piglet on the spit. Great atmosphere outside, especially when the weather is nice and you want to eat outside.

Chick-Fil-A is our favorite fast food restaurant, has wonderful milk shakes-peach in the summer and amazing Christmas season shakes. The kids play area is enclosed and a great place for moms to connect while children play safely. Their kids' meal toys are also very thoughtful and nice. Good people. Look for Poppa J, the greeter.

Pinto Thai is authentic Thai, with Thai chefs and servers. It is now in a vintage building on East Davis with high ceilings and trendy decor, and nice relaxing atmosphere. It also has a bar. This is one of our favorites. We were in Thailand for several months and this food brings back some good memories. The servers are also very nice.

Miss Minerva's is a fun place to go for a girls treat. You can dress up and enjoy tea and goodies and have a quiet, relaxing time with friends and family. We went with my mom, my aunt, cousin and my daughters for a multi-generational memory making afternoon. My aunt is gone now, and I so cherish the memories and photos we have of this time together.

Frost Cafe is an icon in Culpeper. Located at the corner of East Davis and Main, it is in a fine old building and is a step back in time. It seems more like a diner than a cafe. It's a fun place to eat.

We call this the "Amish Store" because of the horse and buggy logo on all their items. It's a great place to get a quick lunch, made to order sandwiches in the back with their freshly cut deli meats and cheeses. It has many pantry items that have been purchased in bulk and divided into smaller containers which we love. Prices of their spices can't be beat. Lake Pelham is adjacent to this property.

This is a great little museum located in the train depot at the end of Davis Street. It has very informative displays of Culpeper through the years, large Civil War section and dinosaur footprint fossil found locally in a quarry. Friendly people.

During the Civil War, this house, very near the railroad tracks, was used as a hospital for both the Confederate and Union soldiers. The wounded men took charred sticks from the fireplace and began to draw artwork and autographs and political cartoons on the wall. These were covered over with years of paint and layers and layers of wallpaper and long forgotten. On the night before it was to be burned by the fire department, someone was salvaging some of the woodwork, and discovered some writing. The burning of the house was cancelled, and slowly, painstakingly, the layers of paint and paper were removed to reveal rooms full of graffiti. It is fascinating, and a donation gets you in.

This is a sobering place to see and learn and remember another time when brother rose up against brother. I recommend the visitor center, the museum and also a walk around the battlefield. My uncle found an old civil war rifle in the Rappahannock River in the 1940's. It was deteriorated. The last time I was at the museum here, it was on display.

Essentials
You need a quarter for the cart, which is returned when you return the cart. You need to bring your own bags or purchase inexpensive paper or sturdy plastic for 5 or 10 cents. But all of this keeps the cost down about 30% of what you would pay elsewhere. It's a small store, so you can navigate through quickly, and there is not a multiplicity of choices of any particular item, but they have almost everything you need. Cashiers are so fast! Aldi is where we go first, and if they don't have it, then we go to Martin's.

Lidl is our new competitor of Aldi. Lidl is much larger, and has a bakery, and more of everything, but it does take longer to shop than at little Aldi. You don't have to pay for your shopping cart, but you do have to pay for bags or bring your own, and you do have to pack your own bags.

There is a pavilion and a playground at the park and the stone chimney ruins of an old house. Spillman is North on Rt. 229-turn left out of the driveway and head toward the village of Jeffersonton.
