“Fremantle Prison, sometimes referred to as Fremantle Gaol or Fremantle Jail, is a former Australian prison and World Heritage Site in Fremantle, Western Australia. The six-hectare site includes the prison cellblocks, gatehouse, perimeter walls, cottages, and tunnels. It was initially used for convicts transported from Britain, but was transferred to the colonial government in 1886 for use for locally-sentenced prisoners. Royal Commissions were held in 1898 and 1911, and instigated some reform to the prison system, but significant changes did not begin until the 1960s. The government department in charge of the prison underwent several reorganisations in the 1970s and 1980s, but the culture of Fremantle Prison was resistant to change. Growing prisoner discontent culminated in a 1988 riot with guards taken hostage, and a fire that caused $1.8 million worth of damage. The prison closed in 1991, replaced by the new maximum-security Casuarina Prison. The prison was administered by a comptroller general, sheriff, or director, responsible for the entire convict or prison system in Western Australia, and a superintendent in charge of the prison itself. ”

“Significant West Australian boats are suspended from the rafters of this sail-shaped museum building. There's the yacht that won the America's Cup race in 1983, pearl luggers and an Aboriginal bark canoe. Take an hour-long tour of the submarine HMAS Ovens; the vessel was part of the Australian Navy's fleet from 1969 to 1997. Tours leave every half hour from 10am to 3.30pm. Book ahead.”

“The Round House was the first permanent building built in the Swan River Colony. Built in late 1830 and opened in 1831, it is the oldest building still standing in Western Australia. It is located at Arthur Head in Fremantle, and recent heritage assessments and appraisals of the precinct of the Round House incorporate Arthur Head.”

“Once a main observation post for a WWII coastal battery, the lookout gives a commanding view of Cockburn Sound, the attractive coastline and the Shoalwater Island Marine Park. A relatively unknown fact is that the cape also contains a number of hidden gun sites from 1942. ”

“Built in 1830, the Round House stands as one of Freo's oldest buildings and icons. Although the building is a must see in it own right, its a great place to go for an ocean view, sunset or just a chill on the lawn. For a short time in 2018 there is a great view of an illusion artwork by french artist Felice Varini that extends a massive 800m across the facades of high street. The central view point is at the steps to the roundhouse. But the most spell binding bit about the trip up to the roundhouse is the little stroll down Captains Lane and back up Ms Trivett Place. This precinct will transport you back and give you an insight into life in this part of the world 190 years ago!”

“We like to drop into Reabold Hill on our way to the beach sometimes, even after many years living in Perth as locals. The changing seasons bring new flowers or wildlife in this high point along the coast. Get your bearings as you look over the coastal plain, the city, the coast line and breath in the smell of the coastal plain natural world. There are various paths that cut through the bush and take you down to the City Beach main swimming spots. Don't worry, you can cafe and take a few breaths before walking back up the hill to your car.”
