“Once home to the kings of ancient Northumbria, Bamburgh Castle is one of Northumberland's most iconic buildings. The Bamburgh castle we see today is a relatively recent structure, built by famed industrialist the first Lord Armstrong at vast cost in late Victorian times. Lord Armstrong was also responsible for building Cragside House, Gardens & Estates. But the castle boasts a much longer history. There have been settlements on the site since prehistoric times and the regular archaeological digs that take place on the site have unearthed some spectacular finds.”

“Great day out for the family - Go back in time in the living open air museum reliving the story of the North East through the 1820's, 1900's, 1940s & 50's. We particularly like to take a picnic and eat up by the farm. If you want a photo of yourself back in time - head there first, situated in the old 1900's town and reserve your slot as this get get fully booked in the holidays. ”

“Avoid the city centre and the nightmare of parking to do your shopping! The Gateshead Metro Centre is a lovely large mall with all the main chain stores like M&S, Next, Debenhams, Primark, TKMaxx and Boots, in addition to numerous boutiques and dozens of restaurants. There is also a massive ten screen cinema attached. There's a kiddy train that drives around the mall and comfortable seating spread throughout to take a little break from shopping. Outside of the mall is a retail park with a 24 hour Asda, Ikea and other big stores.”

“Alnwick Castle is one of the largest inhabited castles in England. Built as a medieval fortress, and owned by the Percy family for over 700 years, today it is known as home to the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland as well as a filming location for Harry Potter and Downton Abbey. With daily tours and activities, in addition to special performances and our famous Broomstick Training lessons, there is always something exciting to see. Whether dressing in medieval costume, practicing archery or admiring the art of the State Rooms, Alnwick Castle provides a memorable experience for every member of the family. The castle is only open seasonally so do check before setting off. ”

“The Life Science Centre offers a combination of hands-on and display exhibits which have been designed to bring out your inner scientist, whilst having some fun in the process. Life also has a special area for under 7’s. This museum does have an admission charge and I would only recommend paying if there is an exhibition on. From November to February, Life hosts an outdoor ice rink in Times Square, just outside the Science Centre. ”
