“One of the best places on Crete. It is 2 hours driving but it worth the trouble. Never stop to swim where the umbrellas and the cantina are. Walk a bit further out to the right and cross the sand dunes. There you will find a lot of quite places to enjoy the coral sand and the sea. The hole area is classed as a wild life park. A must visit place. ”

“Myli Gorge can be found a few kilometres from Rethymno, along the Amari Road. The gorge has some beautiful ruins of old houses and water mills that once formed the village. Huge mulberry, cypress and nut trees grow wild along the gorge’s edge. At the top of the gorge there is a small taverna where you can sit and sample some Cretan dishes whilst enjoying the view. There are also a several small ponds and a picnic area.”

“It is a 16-mile gorge. This is an amazing journey into nature. But it needs good preparation because it is about 4 hours hiking. Its conclusion is in Agia Roumeli, an amazing traditional area. From there you go by boat to Sfakia and return to Chania by bus.”

“Petres Gorge is located 13km west of Rethymno and its mouth is situated on the beach of Episkopi. The river of the gorge is fed by the waters of Kollita Gorges and the surrounding area, covering almost half Rethymnon Prefecture. It has water all year round and forms an important wetland of Crete, especially at its mouth near Episkopi.”

“Kedrodasos (i.e. cedar forest) is an amazing beach, located 76km southwest of Chania and 1km east of the famous Elafonissi lagoon. The beach is filled with cedars and sanddunes, reminding of tropical Lebanese beaches. The beach is protected to some point from the winds that usually blow in the neighboring Elafonissos. The European path E4 crosses the beach (there are yellow and black signs on the way)”

“The Gorge of Kotsifou begins at the village of Kanevos and ends at the village of Plakias. Just 10 m wide at the entrance, the beginning of this gorge is very narrow, however, eventually the gorge widens out to 600m. It is 1,800m long in total and its almost perpendicular walls reach a height of 600 m. A small chapel built into a rocky cavity is situated in the gorge.”

“The Municipal Garden of Chania (map) was designed in 1870, during the Turkish occupation, by Reouf Pasha. It now hosts many types of trees, shrubs, fruit-bearing and ornamental plants, as well as a small zoo with animals from cretan fauna, including the famous kri-kri, the cretan feral goat. On its huge premises you will also find the public children’s library, the public cinema and a municipal cafe. On the northeast corner of the Public Garden began in 1924 the construction of the Clock Tower of the Garden. In 1936, the building that hosts until today the “Garden Cafe” was built. It is a historical place, as it was frequented by celebrities such as Eleftherios Venizelos and Nikos Kazantzakis.”

“The wild Prassano gorge is located 10 km southeast of Rethymnon. Starting south of Prasses village, it offers a three-hour walk through the stunning gigantic rocks and through some relatively hard accesses, which make the passage very interesting. The Prassano gorge is located next to the bare hills of Gargana. It ends in Platanias, east of the town of Rethymno. The area is quiet, with old platans, ideal for relaxing and picnics. Prassano is accessible only from June to October, because of the water flowing through it. It is a very important biotope of Crete, since it hosts buzzards, a small population of Bonelli's eagles, as well as the last four remaining couples of vulture in the Balkans!”
