“The Turquoise Paradise! Balos is surely the mostly photographed beach in Crete, a very favorite subject of all tourist guides for Greece. The lagoon of Balos has white sand and exotic white, vivid blue and turquoise waters. The sea is very shallow and warm, ideal for young children. In many places the sand has a lovely pinkish color, because of millions of crushed shells. Beyond the rocks at the boundaries of the lagoon, the water is deeper and colder, ideal for a snorkeling. The lagoon and the wider area, with rare species of flora and fauna, are protected under the Natura 2000 program.”

“The wider area is named Seitan Limania, after the wild landscape, the steep cliffs and the strong sea streams which are considered dangerous. Here are situated three parallel narrow coves, well protected from the waves.”

“Elafonissi is located 76 kilometers southwest of Chania and five kilometers south of Chrysoskalitissa Monastery, at the southwest end of Crete. Elafonissi looks like an island, because the peninsula at the point that connects with Crete "breaks" and gives the feeling of a separate island. The area has been included in the Natura Protected Areas and is a refuge for the Careta careta turtle. It is strictly forbidden to cut plants from there or to take sand even from the shore! In Elafonissi you will get to the road from Kissamos in about an hour even by bus from KTEL. The road to Elafonissi is narrow and full of turns, but the beauty of the landscape will compensate for you. More choices for accommodation and food can be found in Chryssoskalitissa, located five kilometers north and there you will see the famous Monastery of Panagia Chrysoskalitissa. The beach stretches over long stretches, mainly east of the lagoon. It is organized, it has everything (and special parking space) and especially during the summer months is flooded by people. The shallow lagoon is ideal for young but also for the grown-ups who are willing to play with sand and water! At some points the color of the sand is not white but pink, which is created by the millions of broken shells you will see there. The shores of Elafonisi are more remote and if you want to be a bit more isolated, walk until you find the cove that suits you. The tour of the island is easy to walk.”

“Visit the amazing Balos lagoon see and Gramvousa islet either with the boat cruise** (leaving in the morning from Kissamos port) or with a rented car (preferably a jeep as the last 30 minutes is a very bumpy road) or with a private fast boat.”

“The famous lagoon of Balos is located approximately 56km northwest of Chania and 17km northwest of Kissamos, formed between the Cape Gramvousa and the small Cape Tigani and below the range of Platiskinos. Balos is surely the mostly photographed beach in Crete, a very favorite subject of all tourist guides for Greece. It is no coincidence that Prince Charles and Princess Diana visited Balos with their private yacht many years ago. Balos is famous for its turquoise waters, the wild natural beauty and the beautiful exotic scenery. During the summer, Balos is visited by thousands of people, who arrive mostly by the ferries running from Kissamos port. If you do not like crowds, you’d better avoid to visit the beach in July and August. Also, a perfect idea is to arrive at Balos in the morning, before the boats arrive from Kissamos. These few hours of remoteness in such a heavenly place will remain etched in your memory forever. The lagoon and the wider area, with rare species of flora and fauna, are protected under the Natura 2000 program. Eleonora falcons, shags and cormorants nest in the caves of the area. Moreover, the area is a shelter for the protected monk seal and the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta). Despite the protection, some canteens and umbrellas have appeared on the beach in recent years. You can buy water from there and from the bars of the ferries.”

“Today Falasarna is a popular tourist destination and the beach is among the most renowned in Europe. The sand is light-coloured and turns the crystal clear water into many spectacular shades of blue, while the beach is so vast that, though it is usually crowded, it always looks almost empty”

“The biggest palm forest in Europe, i am sure its worth a visit or more! Vai is located 24 km east of Sitia and about 6 km from Palaikastro. The road from Sitia is generally good and you will have no trouble negotiating it. Sitia is about 2 hours’ drive from Heraklion, and Vai is another 30 minutes further. From Sitia, take the road to Moni Toplou (Toplou Monastery) and continue another 8 km past the monastery to the palm forest.”

“It is certainly the most famous beach in south Crete, accepting thousands of visitors every summer. During the 60s and 70s, it was a favorite destination for the hippies. On the banks of the Grand River there is a large colony of Theophrastus palm trees, which give the region a sense of a tropical landscape. The river, forming a small lake, 500m long, before emptying into the sea, has water all year round. You can walk along the river, under the shade of palm trees, and start ascending in the beautiful canyon. You can swim in the cold ponds formed in the gorge. A big fire in 2010 burnt almost everything of this paradise, but paradoxically the palmgrove recovered most of its damage.”

“Episkopi beach is located 45km east of Chania and 14km west of Rethymnon, in a fertile valley with low plains. The beach of Episkopi is 3.5km long with sand and shallow water, like most of the major beaches of Northern Crete. It is very well organized as there are many great hotel units, taverns, restaurants, bars and all the amenities you might need. Mostly in the western part of the beach you can find places with lifeguards, showers, changing rooms, umbrellas, snack bars, water sports, etc. Next to the beach passes along the northern road of Crete, making it easy to access anywhere. Beach χρυσός αστερίας: Right next to the sea, on a fully organized beach you will find Golden Starfish. Here in a unique place, made with care and attention to detail, you can enjoy your coffee, your refreshments, your juice or whatever else appeals to you and don't worry about our little friends, there is a play area with swings, horses, motorbikes, bicycles, a children's pool so they can be enjoyed. Surrounded by trees and grass you can sit on one of our pergolas or at the bar and enjoy the drink or the best cocktail to drink here. As for our cuisine, it is traditional with a celebration of flavors and senses, here you can enjoy cooked meals of the hour, fresh fish and seafood.”

“Kedrodasos (i.e. cedar forest) is an amazing beach, located 76km southwest of Chania and 1km east of the famous Elafonissi lagoon. The beach is filled with cedars and sanddunes, reminding of tropical Lebanese beaches. The beach is protected to some point from the winds that usually blow in the neighboring Elafonissos. The European path E4 crosses the beach (there are yellow and black signs on the way)”

“Souda beach is after the village of Plakias in south Crete. It is a cozy place and with not so many people. But you need to know not to go with children at the start of the beach where naked sun bathing is common.”
