Coal Valley Cottage is your peaceful sanctuary in Tasmania.
The Coal River Valley hamlet is a quaint rural/farming area (reminiscent of Sonoma County in California about 20 years ago), although it's only 12 mins from Hobart CBD, and 10 mins from the airport, 10 minutes from Richmond.
It's dotted with boutique, family-owned vineyards (many with cellar doors), and sheep and cows grazing in the paddocks, and roadside stalls selling cherries and apricots in the summer.
The area has been known for its cool climate wines, but lately, several whiskey distilleries have sprung up.
Sullivans Cove Distillery (5 minutes away) offers daily tasting and tour.
Lark Distillery (7 minutes away) offers tour and tasting.
And there's Last Rites Brewery (5 minutes away) that opens only on Fridays, where the locals go to catch up on the latest news.
If you love seafood, Tasmania is known for its fresh seafood from the pristine waters, and the specialty seafood places are very near us.
The well known Barilla Bay Oysters is only 10 minutes away.
Candy Ab (wild, dried abalone) is next door from Barilla Bay.
Another place for abalone (frozen, dried, canned) is Tas Live Abalone in Mornington, also 10 minutes away from us.
For crayfish (similar to lobster, but no claws), Tasmanian Gourmet Seafoods is near the airport.
You can have excellent fish & chips there, or purchase cooked crayfish to enjoy later.
There are many dining options in our immediate neighborhood along Richmond Road: from the top notch Frogmore Creek Vineyard (also a very popular wedding venue), casual pizza at Nate's, cheese platters at Wicked Cheese, a French bistro and high tea orangery, to a true blue Aussie pub (Horseshoe Inn on Cambridge Road), and everything in between.
10 minutes away is the picturesque colonial Richmond township with the oldest bridge in Australia still in use. It has had a revival with lovely new shops, including antique shops, and restaurants/cafes.
To walk off the good food and wine, there are several short and medium bushwalks.
The popular Meehan Range/Clarence Mountain Bike Park is nearby, and so is Seven Mile beach.
