Eignin
Due to the current pandemic of Covid-19, there is a ban on short-term vacation rentals in the State of Hawaii. This listing, however, is exempt from that ban.

The County of Hawaii has new regulations regarding short-term rentals effective 4/1/19. Accordingly, this listing is no longer available for short-term rentals (30 days or less). It is available for medium-term rentals (31 days or more) only.

PLEASE BE AWARE: Although Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is re-opened as of 9/22/18, many of the popular tourist attractions in the District of Puna, such as the Green Lake, Champagne Pond, Wai'opae Marine Sanctuary (a.k.a. Kapoho Tide Pools), and Ahalanui Warm Spring no longer exist, buried deep in the lava. Some other places, such as Cape Kumukahi, are inaccessible to the public until further notice. There is now a public road to reach the newly created black sand beaches at Pohoiki but not to Kapoho. The lava flow from Fissure 8 has ceased completely. As of 8/18/18, there is no active lava flow that you can observe anywhere on the Big Island. Any helicopter or boat tours that advertise otherwise are making fraudulent claims.

If you are interested in staying at my place, it would be best if you consider yourself a house-sitter, rather than a house-guest. There will be no housekeeping services at all. Please clean up after yourself, including washing dishes/pans. You may have to take out the trash to the local dump.

Please be forewarned that "I keep house casually..." to quote the haiku poet Issa, who told the watchful spider reassuringly: "...I don't dust the corners. So, don't worry; your web is safe from me. " 『隅の蜘案じな煤はとらぬぞよ』I don't spray harsh chemicals, so you may encounter a few roaches smart enough to avoid the traps scurrying at night. They are more likely the giant American cockroaches [Periplaneta americana] than the common German cockroaches [Blattella germanica].

In the winter months, my wife and I stay here comfortably and we think it is clean enough for us. The cottage, however, has never been cleaned professionally. If you inspect closely, you may find mold and mildew here and there.

Contrary to the Airbnb recommendations, we do not sanitize every surface after our stay as we have been tested covid-19 negative and no one else would have stayed here before you check in. If you are delicate and sensitive and if you expect a meticulously clean place, we encourage you to book elsewhere.

I waive the extra people fees for children 12 years old and younger.

Both the Hawaii state and Hawaii county taxes (10.25% transient accommodations tax + 4.5% general excise tax) are included in the pricing.

Aðgengi gesta
To everything in the premises, including the use of the BBQ grill, stereo, snorkel equipment, bicycles, exercise machines, games, guide books, etc. The hot tub has been fixed and jets are working well again. There are earplugs if you are annoyed by coqui noise. You can also pick your own fruits (papayas & lilikoi) from mini-orchard.

Annað til að hafa í huga
INTERNET: free access to home wifi provided by Spectrum (f.k.a. Oceanic/Time Warner Cable) with a download speed of 45-50 Mbps.

CELL PHONE connections are iffy at the house. To be more specific, depending on your carrier (Republic: excellent; AT&T: inconsistent; Verizon: decent; T-Mobile: bad), you often get some signal when you walk out of the house to the back yard or driveway. Once you start driving back on Kahakai Blvd. toward Pahoa, you will see more signal bars. In the Pahoa Village itself, you get solid signals.

LANDLINE: You can make unlimited free calls anywhere in the U.S. and Canada on the landline phone at the house. Most international calls are also free.

TV: There is no TV reception at all - no antenna, cable, or satellite dish. You can stream Netflix and other subscription services (but not Amazon Prime) via smart TV.

Pāhoa, Hawaii, Bandaríkin

Please be aware that there are no white sandy beaches on the Hilo side of the Big Island. If frolicking on a sunny sandy beach is a priority on your vacation, I would suggest that, instead of my place, you would be happier booking a place somewhere in Waikoloa Village or in Waimea (Kamuela), which is within easy driving distance (1/2 hour) from the gorgeous sandy beaches in the South Kohala District. In contrast, it would take at least 2.5 hours of driving to get to the Kona side beaches from my place.

It might also be important for you to know that it rains frequently, even during the "dry" season on the Hilo side. Lastly, the Puna District, where my cottage is located, has little infrastructure geared toward tourism.

REMINDER: Due to the Kilauea volcanic activities of 2018, even though Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has reopened, many of the popular tourist attractions in the District of Puna, such as the Green Lake, Champagne Pond, Wai'opae Marine Sanctuary (a.k.a. Kapoho Tide Pools), and Ahalanui Warm Spring no longer exist, buried deep in the lava. The lava flow from Fissure 8 has completely ceased. As of mid-August, 2018, there is no active lava flow that you can observe anywhere on the Big Island. Any helicopter or boat tours that advertise otherwise are making fraudulent claims.

If you knew all that already, and if you are looking for peace and relaxation in the jungle away from commercial tourism, then you are looking at the right listing. E komo mai e Puna.

Puna spirit - a mixture of doing-your-own-thing independence & traditional Hawaiian aloha is what you will find here. My cottage is located NOT in the Pahoa Village itself but in the nearby oceanside subdivision called Hawaiian Beaches, which is built over the old lava field (from Kilauea eruptions of 1840's), which has been covered by the jungle - 75% of lots are still undeveloped and remain part of the jungle - expect to hear loud coqui chorus noise every night.

You will find a handful of Day Geckos in the lanai, and a few also inside the house, mostly in the kitchen. They are naturally tame, and some may climb on your hand and lick soft fruits off your fingers -- probably not for squeamish. The more skittish green lizards in the yards are Carolina Anoles. Their males have red dewlaps (throat fans). If you sit at the lanai for a while, you may catch a glimpse of a Mongoose running across the backyard and observe Common Mynas, Zebra Doves, Saffron Finches, Northern Cardinals, Japanese White-Eyes, Java Sparrows, and Hawaiian Hawks, among others.

Toward dusk, you will start hearing piercing chirping noise. It may sound like some kind of a bird to you, but actually, it's a tiny frog. As it gets darker, the noise gets louder as hundreds of male Coqui frogs make territorial and mating calls ("co" warns the rivals, "qui" invites lady coqui frogs). They chirp throughout the night, clear into the dawn until they are replaced by songbirds and roosters crowing. Most people get used to the coqui noise after a short while. Many find the coqui chorus to be soothing. Some high-strung people, however, are annoyed by the noise. Please listen to some recordings of coqui frogs on youtube (search "Coqui Frogs - Hilo, Hawaii" and "Coqui Frogs in the Puna district") before deciding to make your reservation.

You may also hear on some evenings the mating calls of a few cane toads, which sound like a woodpecker or a moped engine failing to start.

From the house, you can often hear ocean waves crashing against rocks in the distance, though seldom at night because coquis are too loud then.

I was born and raised in Japan. I left there in 1968 right after finishing high school, intending to travel around the world in 4 years in lieu of college education. After traveling through south Asia, north Africa, Europe, and Canada on a very tight budget, I arrived in San Francisco in late 1969. Even though I had missed the Summer of Love by a couple of years, I became a hippie, abandoned the rest of my travel plans, and ended up living there all my adult life. I retired from the local school district as a gardener several years ago and bought a cottage on the Big Island where my wife and I stay in winter and spring. The rest of the time, we still live in San Francisco, and our vacation home is available for rent during that time.
