Eignin
Casita #7 is one side of a charming authentic adobe duplex nestled into cliffside with great views of the enchanting rock formations that surround you. While you may find yourself sharing the duplex at large with other guests, you have your own private entrance and patio, and the bedrooms are on the far end of each side of the building so you can easily maintain as much privacy as you wish. We have found though that many of our guests enjoy visiting with their neighbors on the adjacent patio with a bottle of wine from Sutcliff winery just down the road while watching the changing hues on the red rock directly in front at sunset.

The bedroom has a new queen mattress (folks love our beds for comfort!), 100% cotton sheets, down comforter, super soft alpaca blankets, an aromatherapy unit with pure essential oils, a comfy sitting area, 2 large windows, one with a view of the red cliffs. There is a coffee/tea set up, microwave, small fridge, and basic dishware for two. We have gas BBQ available. You may also use our fully stocked community kitchen, open from 8am-9pm, just a 2 minute walk alongside the apple orchard to one side of the established modular home on the property. The spacious bathroom is down a short hall off the bedroom and has a shower with a sitting bench. The unit has a newly installed mini split air conditioner/heater for warm days and cool nights.

You have your own sitting area on the front porch with table and chairs for lounging outside directly beneath a magnificent red cliff and across the arroyo from a huge old apricot tree, pinyon pines, and a currently retired sweat lodge. If you are one of the lucky ones, you might catch a sighting of our resident grey fox roaming around the base of the cliff in the early mornings and around dusk. Two Adirondack chairs with a small table, and a chair hammock are close by, both under mature trees on the grass lawn in front of your casita. A few of the community vegetable gardens are next to the casita to the South which guests are welcome to harvest from as needed, The trailhead leading into the canyons are just a minute walk to the North of the casita along an intriguing rock overhang. Our guests are consistently blown away by the beauty and solitude they discover when hiking into the sculpted red-rock canyons and mesas located just behind your casita.

Guests have full access to the grounds with a variety of lovely sit spots throughout, consisting of hammocks, chairs, and tables with sun umbrellas where you can work on your computer (if you must), nap, read a good book, or daydream, as well as three unique canyons that merge here, with pour overs that become rushing waterfalls when we are blessed with a good rain. Both an archeological and horticultural preserve, the property includes pear, apricot, cherry, mulberry, plum, and peach trees, as well as a 50 plus year old apple orchard planted by George Kelly, a renowned horticulturist from Denver who came here in the 1960's with his wife Sue to create an oasis in the desert. You will also find hundreds of mature native and introduced trees, annual and perennial flowers, native grasses, and cacti throughout the property. We also have a labyrinth that begins directly below Sleeping Ute Mountain range which guests may ambulate.

We border Canyons of the Ancients immediately to the North, a 174,000 acre National Monument with the largest concentration of Ancestral Puebloan ("cliff-dweller") and archeological sites in the United States. A favorite public access point to The Canyons of the Ancients is the Sand Canyon trailhead, a five minute drive from the property up the main road. It is visited by hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders alike. McElmo creek flows along the Southern Border of the property and the highest peak of The Ute Mountain Range towers over us to the South. This 300,000 plus acres of wild land was valued as a sacred place by the Weeminuche Ute band. It still plays an important role in the ceremonies of their descendants, the Ute Mountain Tribe, and is not open to the public.

Hovenweep is a 30 minute drive past the Sand canyon trail head and the entrance to Mesa Verde is a 40 minute drive back through Cortez. Ute Mountain Tribal park is an easy 30 minute drive towards four corners. A bit further away you will find Valley of the Gods, considered a mini Monument Valley and Durango, a wonderful mountain town filled with live music, art, and tempting restaurants.

Staðsetning

Cortez, Colorado, Bandaríkin

Located on 38 acres in the stunning McElmo Canyon, 15 miles from the heart of Cortez, we are a horticultural and archeological preserve. The North side of our place borders Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, 175,000 acres of protected land with access to the Sand Canyon trailhead just a few miles up the road. Immediately to the South of the property sits Ute Mountain, a Sacred mountain range for the Ute people, this 300,000 plus acres of wild land is not open to the public and is completely undeveloped. In essence, we are on 38 acres, deep in a verdant red cliff canyon, surrounded by over 500,000 acres of wild protected land. Needless to say, the star gazing is stunning, and the experience of peace, quiet, and solitude is a rarity.

Sutcliffe Vineyard with exceptional biodynamic wines and fabulous atmosphere is five minutes away down road G and is open every afternoon for wine tastings. You can book a trail ride into the Monument to see Ancestral sites with our immediate neighbors to the west, Rodney and Kristi Carriker of Canyon Trails Ranch, former stewards of Kelly Place from the early 1980's to 2004. Our neighbors up the driveway have fruit orchards galore (apples, pears, plums, apricots, and peaches) as well as locally raised lamb and pasture raised chickens. All we need to do is make a phone call and Greg will come down in his 4 wheeler with as many pasture raised fresh eggs as you want for a bargain. There are farmers and seed savers throughout the McElmo canyon, and local farm stands and farmers markets in the canyon, Cortez, Dolores, and Mancos can be found Wednesday through Saturday from June-October.

Mesa Verde National Park, Ute Mountain Tribal Park, and Hovenweep National Monument are all less than a 45 minute drive. Farther out you'll find Valley of the Gods, Canyon de Chelly, Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness area, Monument Valley, Chaco Canyon, Canyonlands National Park, and Arches National Park. Wonderful live music, art, restaurants and wild adventures are easily accessed in the nearby mountain ski/biking/hiking/rafting towns of Durango and Telluride. A little closer to home you can explore the mostly undiscovered Colorado towns of Mancos, a growing artist community and Dolores, known for the beauty of the McPhee Reservoir and the Dolores river that flows through this eclectic small town.

Truly a magical, unique, and abundant place. Ancient Echoes @ Kelly Place is an ideal home base for your Southwest adventure.

We, Celine and Allison, became custodians of Kelly Place in January of 2021, after traveling through the Southwest Covid style in a truck with a Tupei tent on top the previous September. We stumbled upon this hidden gem with a thought to camp here for one night. Driving through the magical McElmo Canyon at dusk, we saw a small sign on the driveway into Ancient Echos @ Kelly Place that said "For sale by owner." Lo and behold, after sleeping under a blanket of stars the likes of which we had never experienced (and we were from Montana - Big Sky County!), and having our hearts and imagination captured by the red cliffs and the self-guided archeological tour, a dizzying 18 hours later we decided we would return home to Bozeman, sell all of our assets, press pause on our vocations, and become the stewards of this magical place that was in great need of attention and repair!

We are currently caring for the land and renovating the main lodge, including 6 guest rooms, each with a private bath, and the kitchen and bar with a vision to offer food, wine, local cider, and beer to guests and the surrounding community in the near future.

Filled with presence of the Ancients and existing outside of Time, we are inspired to create beauty and live in integrity, reciprocity, and sustainability here with all that surrounds. We are devoted to this place as both a sacred and ordinary home, living as we might wish to live, and inviting others to come be with us in our home space. We are enchanted by the place and looking forward to welcoming guests both old and new.
