Schoolhouse Ballater is a refreshingly different B&B in a beautifully renovated Victorian villa, on the edge of the much loved Scottish highland town of Ballater and in the heart of Royal Deeside. The area is incredibly peaceful, the only sounds likely to disturb your slumber would be tweeting birds in the warmer summer months.

Eignin
Schoolhouse offers 3 spacious bedrooms, for single, twin, double or triple occupancy. There’s also a bright and spacious dining room and lounge, free wifi and large garden with car park.

One of the two downstairs rooms has its own entrance and decking area and the upstairs room has its own private staircase. There are views of the hills or the garden from all the rooms. The bedrooms have bamboo or maple flooring, superking or twin beds, lovely bed linen and great shower rooms attached.

The lounge has enormous sofas and on chilly evenings, a blazing woodburning stove. There’s a selection of books to dip into and self service tea, herbal drinks and coffee.

The dining room is large, bright and airy, with plenty of space to enjoy a delicious healthy breakfast. There’s a wood burning stove in the dining room too for chilly mornings.

Schoolhouse has a large, interesting garden with plenty of places for guests to enjoy a sunny spot or to spend time relaxing.

BREAKFAST
Schoolhouse had been a very popular B&B for 10 years before a severe flood hit Ballater and forced the business to close for almost 3 years to allow renovation (for a second time - owners Alan & Cathy had already completed a full renovation in 2005!) Since that event, Alan and Cathy have become more concerned about the environment and health.

As a result, they will no longer be serving traditional cooked breakfasts but delicious, fresh vegetarian breakfasts with vegan options. They are sure everyone will enjoy and benefit from the new breakfast menu. Wherever possible breakfasts will be made from locally sourced, organic ingredients.

Annað til að hafa í huga
Alan and Cathy have travelled extensively and are internationally minded, speaking several languages. They previously ran an English language school and until their business was flooded out in 2015, they ran English language and dental camps in Sri Lanka and India with UK undergraduates. They now plan to organise and lead winter wellness tours in India and in Sri Lanka (where Alan was born).

Ballater is well known for it’s royal connections - and royalty was attracted here by the same wonderful environment, majestic scenery and world class outdoor activities that all locals and visitors to the area also enjoy.

Ballater
Located within the Cairngorm National Park - the largest wilderness area in Europe, the park is also home to many of Scotland’s highest mountains, wildlife species and scenery that will take your breath away.

Scattered throughout the park are villages and farms, castles and whisky distilleries, craft and art galleries, entertainment venues and a range of shops and restaurants serving the best of local produce.

Ballater itself is a bustling, friendly village with a variety of excellent shops, restaurants, pubs and cafes.

Ballater’s first tourism sprung not from the arrival of royalty in the form of Queen Victoria but from health seeking visitors to the ancient healing waters of Pannanich Wells, so there is a long history here of an environment that is healing. In this modern, busy and stressful world, visitors can enjoy winding down into a more relaxing rhythm - and can still visit the ancient wells site where Deeside Natural Mineral Water is bottled today.

ACTIVITIES
Glorious walks - this is really walking heaven with options for all abilities, including wheelchair accessible tracks. The same stunning environment can be enjoyed on horseback or on wheels with great cycling and mountain biking tracks or 4 x 4 driving. Or take to the skies in a glider to see the panorama below. Skiing, ice climbing, golf and many other outdoor activities are also available.

Seek out history - many people come to research their family ties within the area and there are castles and historic sites aplenty in the area around Ballater.

Enjoy local culture - there’s a thriving music scene and many events throughout the year, including world famous highland games.

Relax and refresh - the fresh air, the nature all around, the pace of life all allow for a sense of freedom and escape, allowing time to simply wind down, relax and enjoy some time out.
