Unwind in the idyllic Saligao village in North Goa (15-minutes by bike or car from Calangute and Candolim beaches) at Miss Jenny's, a homestay in a 100-year-old Goan-Portuguese house, where we live with our adorable doggy. This is one of 3 rooms at our homestay. The independent cottage has private access and offers a double bed, HD TV, AC, mini fridge, tea/coffeemaker & bathroom with geyser. There's a common sit-out in the garden just outside. We are approx 35km from the airport.

Eignin
We have tried to retain the Goan-Portuguese aesthetic of the house outside while providing a comfortable stay with modern conveniences inside. Our home is our happy space and we have extended this philosophy to our guest room too. We have chosen bright, happy colours for the interiors and lots of natural light as that's something my husband and I both love in a home.

We have a lovely garden where you might end up spending most of your time here. Read a book, sip a cup of tea, listen to kingfishers, bulbuls and mynas, or play with the over-enthusiastic doggo in the common sit-out.

Staying in Saligao means that you have a chance to glimpse into the life of the local community. Plus the beach is just a short ride away.

Aðgengi gesta
We have a lovely garden dotted with mango, chickoo and jackfruit trees and a common sit-out area, which you are welcome to use anytime you wish. As this is a residential neighbourhood, we request you to please refrain from playing loud music post 10pm.

Annað til að hafa í huga
We have a very friendly and playful little dog who loves people. However, we also have doggy gates to keep the dog out of the way for those who aren't comfortable with pets.

We have an inverter that supports basic amenities, including TV, for the occasional power cuts.

In the interest of reducing use of plastic, we do not place bottled water in the room, but offer RO-filtered water in reusable bottles. You can refill this anytime from the water dispenser in the common sit-out in the garden.

North Goa, Goa, Indland

Saligao offers everything you would picture in a typical Goan village – grand old Portuguese houses squatting next to each other, ancient jackfruit, mango and chickoo trees, kids riding their bikes and cows moseying along in the small lanes. What drew us to this village is the perfect location, away from the chaos but close enough to the fantastic restaurants and beaches that are a big part of every Goa vacation.

The village is beautiful and the people are friendly. We recommend wandering around its quaint lanes in the mornings or evenings. A walk around the village offers a chance to see Goan-Portuguese architecture with the balcaos, pretty oyster-shell windows, low, tiled roofs, and some very well-landscaped gardens. Stop at a local joint for a tea and ros omlette or a chana ros, or pop into the village pub for a drink and some live music. You will also hear many bird calls, and maybe even spot some birds like drongos, orioles, wagtails or sunbirds in the village and often in our garden too.

We're originally from Mumbai and have now moved to Goa where we run a B&B/ homestay. Working in the media industry (he was a PR professional and I worked with a travel magazine) gave us many opportunities to travel - both for work and fun. We both enjoy a slower pace of travel choosing to soak up the atmosphere of one destination rather than dashing from place to place trying to tick off cities. We always look forward to trying out local cuisine wherever we go and especially enjoy the great outdoors. A while ago we quit the big city life and moved to sunny Goa. We live in a restored 100-year-old Portuguese house in a lovely little village called Saligao. The location allows us to be close to the beaches/ bars/ cafes/ restaurants yet escape to our quiet cocoon at the end of the day. Incidentally, this is also how we choose our hotels when we travel. Moving to Goa has allowed us to slow down and enjoy some of the simpler pleasures of life and meet many interesting people from a variety of backgrounds.

My husband Anirudh and I quit the big city life in Mumbai in favour of greener lungs and moved to the Sunshine State. We instantly fell in love with this quaint village when we first came to Saligao as the bird calls are louder than traffic sounds and the neighbours smile and wave hello.

My husband loves meeting new people and sharing a laugh. I, too, enjoy interacting with people from different backgrounds and learning about different cultures. We're always happy to chat with our guests and share our home with them and help them experience a different, gentler side of Goa, which doesn't usually feature on travel websites.
