Hyde Park, New York, Bandaríkin

Known as "The Village," my part of Hyde Park is a residential neighborhood bordered by the FDR and Vanderbilt sites, the Hudson River and the town center/Route 9. My street is a quiet cul-de-sac.

In addition to its world-famous sites, Hyde Park has lots more to explore. History buffs will find traces of many periods, from the Revolutionary War and Turn of the (19th) Century, to the Thirties, Forties, and Fifties. The town offers a self-guided walking tour that takes in the field stone historic post office, library and elementary school, all crafted during the New Deal with design input from FDR; an early train station that was a whistle stop for FDR (it's a train museum now), and more. For outdoor enthusiasts, a kayak rental is just a few streets away and parks and good walking trails abound.

Folks with an affinity for the Fifties will love our drive-in theatre, vintage-y diner (made famous by Guy Fieri on "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives"), roller skating center and Dairy Queen. We also have a seven-screen movie house (with small-town prices), a locally-owned craft brewery, a handful of small owner-operated restaurants (yummy NY-style pizza, delicious Mexican, sushi and Italian), and several antique shops, plus an excellent wine shop with a knowledgeable staff and a beverage store with a large selection of beers; both stores are favorites of CIA instructors and students.

Some of my favorite restaurants are within 20 minutes, north and south on Route 9. I recommend reservations for all.

The Culinary Institute’s fine dining restaurants require reservations, typically needed well in advance but sometimes there are last-minute openings, worth a call to check. No reservations are taken at The Apple Pie Bakery Café, The Egg, or The Brewery.

River & Post in nearby Staatsburg has well-executed food, interesting cocktails and charming décor and ambiance.

Le Petit Bistro in nearby Rhinebeck is a lovely French restaurant with, I think, very fine food.

Market Street, also in Rhinebeck, is an upscale Italian restaurant whose chef/owner is a former CIA chef/instructor; modern Italian.

Gigi's (upscale Italian) and Terrapin (sophisticated American), both in Rhinebeck, are very good and have streetside outdoor seating.

Cinnamon is a wonderful Indian restaurant in Rhinebeck. Modern takes on the classics. Outdoor seating streetside.

Aroi Thai Restaurant in Rhinebeck has very well-prepared food; lovely patio dining.

CREW is a smallish, casual restaurant with great food by a CIA graduate in Poughkeepsie.

Cosimo's in Poughkeepsie is a popular Italian restaurant with good food, midway between casual and upscale.

The Ice House/Flores Taqueria in Poughkeepsie is alongside the river. On a nice evening dining on the patio is dreamy. Catch the sunset from the patio and/or a bench in Waryas Park next door.

Milea Estate Vineyards in Staatsburg has the most gorgeous views across rolling hills. It's great for a glass of wine outside, but not for dinner. They offer charcuterie and cheese for snacking and often have a food truck.

For Breakfast and Casual Lunches nearby….

In Hyde Park, Route 9, under a mile away
Eveready Diner, right around the corner, south on Route 9, has been featured on “Diners , Drive-Ins & Dives.” It’s a local favorite. All-day service.

Coppola’s is family-owned, traditional Italian-American food, a few minutes from here on Rt. 9

El Guacamole is family-owned. Good Mexican-American food, a few minutes from here on Rt. 9.

Mizu Sushi is in the little mall a few minutes from here. Sushi lovers say it’s wonderful.

Dairy Queen & McDonald’s are both on Rt. 9, a few minutes from here.

In Poughkeepsie, 8 to 9 miles away
Kelley’s Bakery has fabulous breads, cookies, scones, etc., interesting sandwiches. B&L.

Lola's Cafe, next to the stairs to the Walkway Over the Hudson, has wonderful soups, salads and lunch entrees. Lunch only.

Lolita's Pizza, which shares locations and owners with Lola's, is famous for its Neapolitan pizza, pasta dishes, desserts and imaginative cocktails. Dinner time only on weekdays, lunch through 9 pm Saturdays and Sundays.

In Rhinebeck, 11 miles north
Bread Alone in Rhinebeck for great artisanal breads, sandwiches, soups. B&L.

Aba’s Falafel in Rhinebeck does falafel so well! Lunch only and outdoor or takeout only.

Sammy’s Sweet Shop, local favorite for candies, coffees, cookies, etc. Owned by Paul Rudd & Jeffrey Dean Morgan

Originally from Ohio, I've lived in Hyde Park for 30 years. After a long career in food communications, I've switched to Airbnb hosting. It's fun meeting guests and sharing the charms of the Mid-Hudson Valley with them. With the majestic Hudson River running through it, mountain vistas in all directions, rolling hills and peaceful farms and fields, it's an exceptionally beautiful place. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Hyde Park's favorite son, famously expressed his attachment to his boyhood home when he said: "All that is within me cries out to go back to my home on the Hudson River." I hope you'll come visit MY home on the Hudson, just a mile down the road from FDR's.

Please be aware that there are two resident cats. While they're not allowed in the guest suite, one is especially friendly; you may have to shoo her away from your door when you're on the way out.
