Painswick, England, Bretland

The lodge is within walking distance (uphill for part of the way) of Painswick village centre and the famous St Mary's Church, known for it's 99 yew trees and tabletop tombs, a photographer’s dream. Legend has it that the Devil won’t let a hundredth tree grow.

Painswick, known as ‘The Queen of the Cotswolds’ nestles into the hillside and is characterised by beautiful honey coloured stone buildings, dating back to the C15th. Painswick is also home to the country’s oldest bowling green.

A video of the village can be found here https://www.facebook.com/discoverstroud/videos/957936111039567/

Sitting halfway along the Cotswold Way, the village is surrounded by uplifting countryside and a great base for walkers. There are great views across the Severn Valley to the Welsh mountains from the Painswick Beacon. If you prefer to travel by bike, there are many options to hire electric bikes from nearby Stroud.

Painswick was chosen as a location for the BBC TV adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s "The Casual Vacancy".

Things to do in Painswick include exploring the narrow streets, to unearth some fascinating galleries and shops. Friendly pubs serve locally-brewed ales and there are some excellent cafes and restaurants and of course the award winning "Painswick Hotel" where you can get a great cocktail or afternoon tea.

Events in Painswick include an annual village Easter Egg hunt, the Arts Festival and the Art Couture Painswick Festival. This festival brings the world of wearable art to life and adds a riot of colour to the churchyard and surrounding streets.

Hi I am Hannah, mother of two and wife to David. I moved back to Painswick after a stint in Manchester and London and am loving being back home after 20 years away. I love all that Country life has to offer, from long country walks, village life to growing vegetables, feeding my chickens, collecting milk and meat from the local farms and reaping the benefits of the fine country air.
