Come home from work or play to this serene open floor plan awash with natural light under vaulted ceilings. Bright blue and green on the outside, calmingly colorful on the inside, let this airy space be your sylvan corner of Nashville. Spend time inside resting, cooking, watching TV, listening to music, reading. You could also take your time with us outside into the back yard where you can sit among newly renovated gardens, watch the chickens, enjoy a fire or hang in a hammock. Welcome!

This is an incredibly comfortable space. And I'm not just saying this because it's mine. Between the ample sunlight and the minimal decorations, there is a calmness that is present here. I am a reflective and quiet person, with a minimalist style myself. I hope you find a certain peace here.

In addition to being a very clean space, there are many amenities that I've provided to make your stay comfortable: first aid kit, emergency feminine supplies, shampoo, conditioner, soap, extra razors if you forgot yours, hair dryer, a basic kitchen set up (utensils, bowls, cooking spoons and spatulas, etc.), dish soap, extra pillows and blankets, firewood, kindling, matches and even marshmallow sticks. All cleaning supplies, soaps and shampoos are safe for our environment, and I hope you will help me recycle by putting your glass and plastic bottles, aluminum cans and other recyclable materials in the appropriate recycling bins that I've provided under the sink.

The brown sofa folds out into a full sized bed, futon style. There are no bars in the middle of the back, so you'll have a great sleep. It is also an incredibly comfortable sofa to sit or lay on. Please see the "Check-in" instructions for help on how to unfold and fold this futon back up. It will break (and has!) if you don't do it correctly. If it does break, let me know and I will come set the spring correctly.

I also pride myself on being an environmentalist consumer insofar as I believe in re-using. About 75% of the furnishings in this space were procured for free, at Goodwill or from neighborhood garage sales and listserv advertisements. The mattress, linens, sofa, carpet and television are brand new, as are the fridge and stove, though these last two I got for a song at the "scratch and dent" store. I am always shocked at what folks throw away since most of these items are like new. Others may have required a tad of shinola to be as nice as they are now. I'm interested to see what you think.

Perhaps my most favorite re-purposed items are the three pieces of wall art. My good friend's mother unexpectedly passed away and she offered me several of her mom's possessions. The paintings on the wall are from a local artist and the strange spool and bird piece was created from her mother's box of crafting supplies I could not bring myself to throw away. It's called "Brigit's Desk." A closer look at the piece will reveal the meaning of the title.

Outside you'll find new landscaping populated with native pollinating plants. I recently planted two PawPaw trees, so if you come back a few years from now, you might get to taste their fruits! In the gardens are irises, mountainmint, poppy (I didn't realize Tennessee had poppies!), red beebalm and white beardtounge. I confess I do have some nasturtium along the retaining wall, which isn't native, but it's such a tidy little plant, I couldn't help myself. Along the fence we'll see hopefully a clematis vine or two along with some morning glories. The vegetable garden is always a work in progress, so excuse our construction. However, the tomatoes are all heirloom varieties! Also, all but one of our chickens met their end in the jaws or clutches of various vermin or birds of prey. Rocky, the one pictured, has joined a flock down the street. We'll be getting new chicks as soon as I make our hen house Fort Knox so our girls can be happy, healthy and harm-free.

Nashville, Tennessee, Bandaríkin

I am two miles south of Centennial Park, the iconic green space that makes this town "The Athens of the South" and pays homage to the railroad history that gave rise to the vast system of higher education here.

South of this location are hamburger, pizza and coffee joints, all within walking distance. Further down you'll find a park with a public library and some interesting second hand shops, including an eclectic used bookstore. A further walk east will land you on a nice 3.5 mile green mile loop and in the center of some surprisingly good restaurants.

In my immediate neighborhood of Sylvan Heights, we are in the midst of change. We have a wide variety of ethnicities and incomes, but Nashville development is unfortunately gentrifying this neighborhood. While I find this development challenging because it tends to "white wash" culturally rich neighborhoods, it does bring amenities, such as yoga and pilates studios, coffee houses, and vegan bakeries. There are many, many examples of these within walking distance. In my estimation, ML Rose--about a 10 minute walk from my place--has the best burgers and beer in town and Star Bagel--across from McCabe Community Center and greenway--has excellent bagels, muffins, coffees and fresh juices.

I am a native Nashvillian (yes, there are a few of us left) who has travelled widely and lived on both coasts and some places in between. I also lived in Switzerland for a year and travelled all around Europe, the UK and India. One of my goals is to reach all seven continents. Three down, four to go! I am a work hard/play hard kind of person. My work as the leader of a local nonprofit organization keeps me busy with writing, teaching, empowering volunteers and generally steering the ship. My play is indeed hard: I love to climb rocks. I also enjoy kayaking, camping, hiking and gardening, not necessarily in that order. I try to be outside as often as I can be. At my home you'll find a fiesty-at-first corgi who becomes your best friend once she has announced herself, two chickens (not roosters!) who coo when you approach them and are generous with their produce, work-in-progress-gardens and a diverse neighborhood that, to me, is a slice of the real Nashville. We work, we play, we raise our kids and we do all this with grace and cooperation. My little corner of Nashville is a village and we help each other out as often as we sit on our porches in good weather and share the week's news.

I have a coded lock on the door, so we can have as much or as little interaction as you prefer. In nice weather I am often in the backyard gardening, tidying up, reading in a hammock or tending to the dog. And it is common for me to enjoy a fire on the weekends. You are welcome to join me!

I would also be willing to barter some dog-sitting in exchange for a lower rate on weekends I may be away.
