Það sem verður gert

A 4-hr autumn/winter activity at the village of Pera Orinis, just outside Nicosia. We'll meet in down town Nicosia and drive to Pera Orinis, where you will experience and learn about sustainable olive-picking practices, along with a traditional home-made meal.
We'll meet at our arranged meeting point at start time, and make our way to Pera Orinis (approx 30 min), with a light chat on political-economic-historical background of Cyprus and importance of olive trees.
At Pera Orinis, we'll meet my mum and start with refreshments. Once ready we’ll set up the family’s specialist equipment for olive-picking. We’ll pick olives for a couple of hours in the traditional and sustainable way. Then, we'll start the preparation of traditional (green) 'tsakistes' olives, which you can complete at home (we'll provide instructions). We'll have a traditional meal in the field, usually a main dish and local tapas, and you'll also taste olive-based products. You can choose one olive-based product to take home with you as a gift from us, and we are happy to provide local recipes, if you wish to!
We'll head back to Nicosia shortly after our meal, where the experience ends. We’ll drop you off at our original meeting point.

I am an early-career scientist (geographer) interested in environmental conservation and sustainability. Coming from Cyprus, I've lived and studied in the UK and US and got inspired from my travels.
Efforts for the survival and preservation of olive and carob trees began 3 years ago in family land passed down to my mum over the last 200 years. My mum, Ziannet (https://www.airbnb.com/users/show/272393178) is a local expert, economist in profession, who has managed her land for years, and is interested in ecotourism and sustainable practices.
The initiative Olives&Carobs was recently created by my mum and I, in hopes to revitalise the trees and raise awareness about their high natural, nutritional and economic value, whilst pursuing a positive impact in the community.

Staðsetning

We'll spend our time in inherited family land at the village of Pera Orinis, just outside Nicosia. Olive-picking at Pera Orinis has been a family activity for the past years, whilst the production of olive oil was a major source of income for my grandparents.
The small house by the fields is also available for your convenience, built to support field activities through the years.

A beautiful experience to see a family tradition kept alive for hundreds of years. Adeline and her family were warm and welcoming, offering us traditional dishes and accomodating to our dietary needs. We left with a handful of olives we picked ourselves and will now get the chance to prepare them ourselves.

Interesting experience. The entire event was well organised. They had the required equipment for olive picking ready. Adeline’s family was very warm and friendly. They even cooked a special vegan lunch for us.

Had a lovely day with Adeline, Janet and Joseph. Even though we just met it felt like we've known each other for a long time. Traditional Cypriot food was lovely. Special thanks to Janet for cooking tender roasted pork with bulgur and many more side dishes. We've shared our own stories and learnt so much from each other. Looking forward to attend their future events in different parts of the island too.❤ Almost 10 cases of Olives by the end of the day makes you feel accomplished. Go ahead if you want to beat our record and do something very Cypriot. (who knows may be Joseph lets you to use olive harvester machine :)
