Það sem verður gert
Are you ready to meet the locals and have an unique experience?
From your guesthouse the tuktukdriver will pick you up and drive you to Kalegana, a small village in Galle.
There you will meet Amila. He will be your host for the tour. You will meet him at his house where he lives with his family.
You will be very welcome to look around and ask any questions that pop up.
There you will start with painting the wooden elephant. Off course you can get some help from one of the best painter in town, Amila his aunty. Then is it time to let the elephant dry.
It is time to walk around the village and visit the places where people still practice the art of woodcarving. You can see how they work and see the beautiful statues they make.
During the tour you will drink a tea or if you are lucky a fresh coconut, without plastic straws! Local style :) but also make sure you bring enough water. It can be hot!
When the walk is finished, it is time to say goodbye to Amila and his family.
You will leave the village with your own painted elephant and unique experience richer. The tuktukdriver will bring you back.
With this unique tour you will support a local family directly! Fair travel, fair prices.
If you want to buy souvenirs during the tour, that is also possible. You will get a good price and the maker get a fair price so good for everybody!
Other things to note
The pick up from your guesthouse in Unawatuna or Galle is included in the price.
If you stay somewhere else, there will be an extra charge for the pick up. So it is also possible to pick you up anywhere you want :)

Hi,
Thank you for being interested in the Woodcarving Tour.
My name is Dinesh. This year I created with my Dutch wife a tour to my woodcarving village in Galle. It is my village where I grew up.
I don't give the tour myself. The tour will be given by Amila. He practice the art of woodcarving for a long time and is born in the village. He is an expert!
He knows a lot to tell about the village and the proces of woodcarving. He can even teach you the skills!
It is an unique tour here in Sri Lanka, the only one!

Very nice host and arrangement. The host was very eager to tell us about everything we asked or saw, we spent more time with him than what was expected and we could have stayed longer if we wished. Painting was fun, the walk was nice and very warm, so bring water! Lunch was good but seating was sparse. We really got to see how life was in the village.

My wife and our 2 sons really enjoyed this experience, boys enjoyed using carving instruments and painted nice elefants! Communication was very quick and efficient, and Dinesh also arranged pick up and drop off by tuktuk, which was an extra bonus for kids:)

We spent the day with Amila who turned out to be a wonderful host. The day started with a demonstration of how they make their living and they explained each process of the elephant making. We were then invited to do some painting and it was actually a therapeutic process.
We walked around the village and met all the locals and also understood the religious and cultural beliefs. The food was made by a local family and it was well presented and culturally significant.
All in all this activity gives a glimpse of local lifestyle from a very honest and altruistic perspective
