The tour will commence at the Independence Visitor's Center with an introduction to the topic of Black History during the colonial period. You will hear about the role that Black Americans played in the founding of the nation. The group will continue to the President’s House and hear about the 9 enslaved people who were held there. The group will hear about Martha Washington's handmaid who ran away to escape slavery. At the next stop you will see where The Fugitive Slave Act 1793 was passed.

The next stop is Congo Square where people of African descent held celebrations. It is also a potter's field where free and enslaved Africans are still buried to this day. The next stop is Mother Bethel AME Church. There is where the African Methodist Episcopal Church was established and is the oldest piece of real estate owned by people of African descent in the United States.

You will hear about the liberation of a woman whose owner attempted to abduct her back into slavery and the trial of her rescuers.

You will also see the traditional sites of Independence Hall, liberty bell, Congress Hall, and much more

I was born and raised in Philadelphia and I love my City. I have a formal education in history and historical research. I also went to law school. I'm naturally bubbly, friendly and approachable.

I have a guide that gives tours on The Black Journey. His name is Mijuel. He has a degree in history and political science.

This tour was great, I’d strongly recommend doing this tour before taking a traditional history tour to understand the parts of the story that most tours don’t share

This is such a great window into the experience of Black Philadelphians around the Independence maneuvering going on in the US in the 1700 and 1800’s. Raina did a great job connecting the Black experience to the reality of the times. I recommend this tour to any student of history wanting a fuller insight into America, our leaders, and the reality for African Americans. The characters change but the struggle remains the same.

This was an amazing experience! I had taken the tour because I'm thinking about teaching in the Philly area, and wanted to know the history of the students I might be teaching. The guide was incredibly knowledgeable and very charismatic, which made this tour an awesome one. Definitely wear comfy shoes, weather appropriate clothes and bring water!

This tour was good for the price. We started a few minutes late because of traffic problems, but the guide was very respectful and did not start to move until we got there. There were a lot of little tidbits that he added to the already well known history that have stayed with us. Our group was all white, and we did not feel out of place, and he was very careful in his wording, which was nice, but maybe even too careful at times. Thank you for taking the time to make this tour possible. A great thing to bring the whole family to.
