Það sem verður gert

COVID-19 CHANGES: Please note that, due to the risks of car sharing with guests who are constantly changing, I feel that I cannot offer the car journey (which makes it a circular walk for you) this year. If you are able to organise transport for yourselves, or if you would like to walk there and back, please read on.

This year, the walk starts at the Stakes Hill end of Aveton Gifford tidal road. After ensuring you have the correct footwear (bare feet are not permissible), we'll set off at low tide into the middle of the estuary, criss-crossing the river until we reach the slipway leading up to the entrance to Bantham beach (about 2.5 miles downstream). You can either finish here or walk back with me. We will walk across both soft and firm terrain, often uneven, with muddy patches mostly at each end. Please note that our periodic wading will normally be to about knee height but, as tides vary in their height daily, be prepared that it may be deeper. At about the halfway point, you can clamber up the side of a lime kiln, which gives you a stunning, panoramic view of the wide river valley. During the walk, you will be in a large landscape with few people. The estuary environment is a special one, so I expect this will be a walk like no other you will have done! Please ensure you are fit enough to complete the distance across the varying terrain explained above.

I have been living and walking around Aveton Gifford since 2000. The Avon river estuary is part of the lifeblood of this village and I have been exploring it at low tide on foot and at high tide by kayakand and paddleboard for many years. It is one of my favourite places, which I would love to share with guests.

Staðsetning

Our walk takes us down the meandering, steep-sided river valley of the Avon estuary, until we reach the popular, sandy Bantham beach. It is a little-visited area and accessible on foot only at low tide. You will find yourself with a wide vista and the possibility of passing the local swans, who may fly low along the valley with their beating wings a sound that you will remember.

I was lucky enough to be the only guest on this trip with Keran. I loved walking and wading down the estuary, seeing the birds, plants, oyster beds and the guys digging for lugworms. It was a very interesting and peaceful walk and Keran is very knowledgeable and good company too!

This is a fantastic chance to safely walk down the middle of the estuary, led by Keren who made us all feel very welcome and has great love for the estuary. For me, this trip 'made' our holiday. A really special chance to experience something that we have never done before. Thanks Keren.

A unique experience - not something I would ever have done by myself! Keren provides surf boots and she and her daughter took me down the middle of the estuary at low tide, from Avedon Gifford to Bantham, walking either on the sandy river bed or wading through water (up to your knees). Keren was very knowledgeable about the estuary and the surroundings. We saw swans, cormorants, egrets and a heron. It was great to have this unique perspective on the estuary as there were areas where no signs of habitation could be seen in either direction and you really felt you were in wilderness.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole estuary walk. It was unique and Keren gave us total confidence that she understood the tides and the safe places to walk. We would highly recommend it.

What a great experience. Keren was immediately friendly and knowledgable about the river and river life. We had a very pleasant stroll down the river. It was so peaceful away from the roads and houses, a beautiful river valley otherwise impossible to access. She was able to provide suitable footwear too.
