Það sem verður gert

Your group (up to 10 persons) will learn the process of making maple syrup from sap. I will guide you through a tasting of this years syrup and explain how to grade maple syrup. We will then try some sugar on snow you will never forget!

Maple sap runs when the days are above 38 degrees and the nights are below freezing. If the sap is not running, I will boil water (sap is 97% water) for the class if sap is not running during the class. If the dates that we have listed don't work for your time frame, just send me an email and I can see if we can find another time for your truly Vermont experience.

We will have a maximum of 10 people since the sugar house is small and We require all participants to be masked, we are not a giant production house that does thousand of gallons per year. Children under 5 are free. We at most make 50 gallons, most of which I bottle in my handblown glass!
Other things to note
Part of the experience will be outside to see how sap flows from the tree into lines hung on maple trees. Inside the sugar house, we'll have the evaporator boiling (sap in season water when not in season). We do not have any toilet facilities- except in the wood! So please plan ahead.

I have been producing small-batch award-winning Taft Hill Farm maple syrup for more than 25 years. Come have a tour of our maple bush and sugar house, and taste our maple syrup. Our Historic (President Taft's Father born here) mountain-top farm is nestled along Sadawga Brook and has old-growth maple trees that have been here for 250+ years.

Taft Hill Farm got its name from Peter Rawson Taft, the grandfather of President William Howard Taft. Alphonso Taft was born at the farm in 1810 and was President Taft's father. I have been farming this land since 1993 and I love to share my passion for farming in all seasons.

The West River Community Project, housed in the West Townshend Country Store on Route 30 in West Townshend Vt, was established in 2010 to help foster the revitalization of our community in the West River Watershed. First, we wanted to create a public place to gather, make music, celebrate events and show art. We wanted to support sustainability and local development in the local foods movement.

Staðsetning

We will meet at the sugar house by the side of the brook. Look for a black pick-up truck with a Parking sign on the back. It is on the left side of the road 1/4 mile before you come to our farm house. We'll take a look at our sugar bush and see how sap comes of the trees. If you are coming from the north set your GPS to Townshend. When you get to Townshend Common reset your gps to our address! If not it will take you over a 4 wheeler trail!

Our group of 10 HIGHLY recommends this for anybody visiting the area. This was the highlight of our group's Vermont Ski Trip - we learned all about maple syrup, everything from the tree to the sugar house processes. We were able to taste test a few different things which was a real treat. I cannot stress how excellent Robert was in his presentation to us - it was engaging and we all came away learning an incredible amount about the syrup process. Furthermore, we were able to learn about the history of the farm, the Townshend community, as well as Robert's other endeavors - which we found fascinating. Overall, the experience was 10/10 and will definitely come back to visit when we are in the area again!

Like everyone else has said, this was a must do experience. Robert is the coolest guy, so obviously passionate about his work and full of knowledge! The only thing I regret is not signing up for the glass blowing experience so I could have more stories from Robert!

This experience is a must when traveling to Vermont. It is both educational and DELICIOUS. Robert is very passionate and enthusiastic. He has so much knowledge and insight on the maple sugaring industry. He is captivating and so personable too. We learned much more than expected and were intrigued the entire time. Being able to taste the sap was quite an unexpected treat. It is nothing like one would imagine. The award-winning, top-rated syrup that Robert produces from this sap is a true delicacy. It has such incredible depth of flavor and the smoothest mouth feel. Our group of 10 ranged in age from 7-64 and all of us truly enjoyed this experience.
