Það sem verður gert
A walk through Congo Square and the Historic Faubourg Treme culminating in a talk at my studio about Hoodoo, Voodoo, Black Carnival Traditions, the deeds and misdeeds of my own Louisiana Creole ancestors and other lesser known aspects of New Orleans history and culture. In my studio rum bar you will enjoy coffee, rum and a chance to check out my art and black masking Indian attire. My house has long been a place where friends come to ground themselves in the cultural vibration of the city. I am so excited to now share this experience with you!
Other things to note
While the majority of my presentation will be at my studio, we will also walk six blocks and stand in one place for long periods. Please wear comfortable shoes and stay hydrated because the heat can be oppressive, especially in the summer. BTW - NO PHOTOS of my studio or myself are allowed, thank U.

I'm an artist and 12th-generation Afro-Creole. My family fled Louisiana in 1970 to escape racial oppression. I returned 15 years ago to reconnect with the land of my ancestors. I make art with wood salvaged from my Katrina-damaged home in Treme, and mask as a Medicine Man in the Black Masking Indian tradition. My art is in the permanent collection of the American Folk Art Museum and in the homes of art-lovers worldwide.
Staðsetning
The experience takes place roughly an hour in the park and an hour at my studio, which is seldom open to the public. After Hurricane Katrina, I converted former slave quarters into an art studio, Hoodoo shop, and guest rooms.

Great experience. He went above and beyond to tell us the history of NOLA. I heard things I never even heard about before which will stick with me, and I appreciate the history even more. Happy to have attended and it was more than worth the money ! I wouldn’t hesitate to book this at all :)

This tour was absolutely incredible and I highly recommend it. I know it sounds, from the title, that it could be cheesy, but it's really anything but. Jean-Marcel *eventually* gets to hoodoo and voodoo, but his storytelling and history expertise is (rightfully so) based on the black experience in New Orleans. He educates on the absolute endless atrocities of the black slave in New Orleans and how their West African roots informed so much of their culture, food, survival, faith, and tenacity. There's no way for Jean-Marcel, or anyone else, to talk about hoodoo and voodoo in New Orleans without understanding who the people were and how they got here. The truth is that's not an uplifting story. It's a horrendous story that still lives on today, and Jean-Marcel takes that head on, as he should. The tour ends in his backyard in his studio that will absolutely drop your jaw. I cannot recommend this tour highly enough. If you're fragile about the truth of the black experience in America...then you should DEFINITELY GO ON THIS TOUR! ha! Jean-Marcel is a star. Go on the tour!
