Það sem verður gert

This is an in-depth walking tour focusing on traditional Japanese cultures of what used to be the heart of old Tokyo. I’ll help you navigate this maze-like area that interchanges between tradition and modernity. We’ll cover everything you’ve ever wanted to know about Japanese culture as a whole and local Asakusa culture stemming from old Edo, from the history of Buddhist and Shinto religions and how they’re practiced today to the best spots for local food, awe-inspiring traditional crafts and other arts of which many are on the verge of disappearing.

This tour starts at Azumabashi Bridge over Sumida River which has been one of the most important and popular rivers in Tokyo.
Actually, the story of Sensoji temple originated in this river 1400 years ago. Then, we move on to the world's well-known Thunder-gate with a giant red lantern hanging under the gate. That is the entrance to the world of Buddhist temple and Shinto shrine.

Enjoy traditional sweets along the way humbly but proudly offered by long-established shops.
With sleek rickshaws gliding through the Edo-style streets colorfully dotted with kimono, every moment is a photo op.
Other things to note
This is a walking tour, so wear sensible shoes and bring a bottle of water. There will be brief rest stops.

I am a national government licensed tour guide specializing in Asakusa, the heart of old Tokyo. This area is one of the most well known and popular tourist destinations and filled with nostalgic Japanese cultures of ordinary people lived in old Tokyo.

Before, I had worked as a certified Japanese teacher in Japan and in the US. I learned "teaching language is teaching its culture." So as a tour guide, I would like to introduce not only the fact but also its background stories as much as possible.

Having lived in Europe and the US for 18 years with my family, I was deeply touched by how friendly and kind the locals were. I realized how important it was to interact with locals since we were able to enjoy many memorable experiences. These nice experiences made me become a tour guide.

I wish my guest unforgettable wonderful memories!

Staðsetning

Asakusa, located in the northeast of Tokyo central is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Japan among domestic and international tourists.

You will enjoy a lot of background stories of each tourist spot there. Asakusa has been a center of Japanese commoners' cultures such as religion, food, art, entertainment since Edo period or the old Tokyo period. I can host you in the theme of your interest combined with the history.

Immerse yourself in Japanese history.... We did a beautiful walk through Asakusa. Yoko started with a Japanese geography lesson and talked extensively about the history of each area that we visited. There was a visit to the Asakusa tourist center where Yoko took us up to an observation deck and we got a great view of the streets leading up to and around the temple areas. The best snack experience was the melon bread and Yoko took us upstairs into a traditional Japanese central room to enjoy the bread. Overall, a detailed rendering of Japanese history with personal stories provided by the guide made for an excellent tour. Thank you, Yoko!

Yoko's background as an educator really came through during the tour. She provided a helpful overview of Asakusa history before we started walking - it was obvious she cared about the quality of the experience. She worked diligently to ensure we understood the importance of what we were seeing, tasting, and hearing. In addition to being an excellent guide, she also helped us make arrangements with our travels the next day. Yoko was extremely helpful and I would highly recommend her.

Yoko is a gem! Do this tour immediately. Yoko quickly becomes a friend, sharing her personal experience and passion for her beautiful country while taking care of every detail. She greeted me with a huge hug and smile, and we were off for an amazing afternoon. I have to mention something that is completely unheard of in all of the tours that I have taken around the world: Yoko agreed to take me for a solo tour on her day off, after no one else booked (and when other companies would usually cancel the tour). Not only that, but she would not accept extra payment, which is usually a prerequisite as a solo traveler if I can convince a tour guide to take me when no one else joins. She knew that it was my last day in Tokyo and wanted to ensure that I got the full experience that one can only get from an expert. I had an unforgettable day in magical Tokyo because of Yoko’s kindness, enthusiasm, generosity, and rich knowledge about Japanese history and culture. I can’t recommend her highly enough. Go see Yoko right away! She is truly one-of-a-kind.

Yoko gave a very fun and informational walking tour of the neighborhood I’m staying in. She gave us the layout, took us for snacks, told us stories, pointed out artifacts you would otherwise miss and have ya good food suggestions. The tour moved along at a nice pace and everyone was very friendly. Yoko answered all of my questions thoroughly and even took the time to write me some personal recommendations which I appreciate!

We are so glad we did the history tour with Yoko. She was warm and engaging and full of interesting facts and stories about the history of Japan, which totally enriched our walk around Asakusa. Yoko also pointed out many restaurants, theatres and other places to see and explore, which was extremely helpful. The snacks we had along the way were delicious and Yoko even gave us all pocket-warming packs for our hands as it was such a cold day! I highly recommend taking a tour with Yoko.
