Það sem verður gert

Get you boots dirty and your soul clean. Come and be a woodsman for a day in the fresh air alongside our experienced foresters, getting hands-on with tools and trees.

We'll be clearing woodland, felling trees, splitting firewood, using our saw mill to plank wood and more. Along the way you'll learn traditional techniques in forestry and how to manage a woodland to outlast us.

Starting around 11am, you will be working with our resident foresters, working around 2 acres of woodland. First there is a short induction over tea. Then you will be working in a small team with axes, handsaws and billhooks taking down younger trees to allow space for others to mature.

There’s a campfire lunch and then it is time to put hards hats on to fell a tree or two. After that, it is time for the fine art of wood-chopping - one of life’s most satisfying things. They say chopping your own wood will warm you twice! We finish around 6pm.

You are welcome to stay for a drink around the campfire, and camp out overnight in the woods. There is also a nice pub a short walk away if you fancy a hearty meal after your hard work.

We hope you'll leave us with a better understanding of the woods, how we work with nature to sustain ourselves and our environment, and have some skills to show off as well.

Joy manages over 100 acres of woodland in Gloucestershire. She and a team of resident foresters are working to restore this neglected woodland to its former glory. We make small steps everyday but we are planning 50 years ahead so that others can enjoy its benefits.

Staðsetning

Voltaire's Wood is a working wood, being brought back to life after several decades of neglect. There are several dogs on site, and we often have foresters or workers around, but it takes only a minute to lose yourself in the trees. It is near Stroud, about 90 minutes from London and Birmingham, and under an hour from Bristol.

Please dress the part and be prepared for some walking through the woods. We will accommodate as much as we can, but you will need a reasonable level of fitness and a willingness to get sweaty.

Hvað þarf að taka með

Rain gear: you will never regret a good waterproof jacket with a hood.

Clothes you don’t mind getting mucky. We tend to stay fairly clean around here, but it’s not a place for your Sunday best.
