Það sem verður gert

Budapest has a very rich history of Jewish life, starting in the early 19th century. You will have the opportunity to learn about Jewish life, the development of different streams, the „golden age” and the times of raising antisemitism and the war, followed by the communist era, and today’s communities, and Jewish revival.
We will see synagogues (we won't enter the big one, they have their own special tours), but we will enter the less known Orthodox synagogue and we'll see buildings related to them, such as the mikve (traditional bathing place), or the remains of the ghetto wall. But today, this district is a lot more than that. Not only it became the party district where thousands of young tourist come every year to discover the ruin bars, the restaurants and the small design shops, it is also reawakening its Jewish roots, and now we can see Jewish style restaurants, kosher bakery stores and pizzerias, small pastry shops with Hungarian Jewish desserts, which we will be able to have a taste of, and many other surprises wait for the visitors.
I will be happy to share my story with you, and my personal experiences as a young Jew in Budapest. Please keep in mind that if you book for Saturday, or on a Jewish holiday, we will not be able to enter the synagogue, in this case I will write you before the tour to let you know if there is a holiday!
Other things to note
We will spend a lot of time outside, so be prepared according to the weather. We will have a few indoor stops as well, (to warm up in the winter, or cool in the summer) and there will be chance for using the bathroom. Having a good level of English is quite important to enjoy the experience fully.

My name is Dora, I'm 32 years old, and I was born and raised in Budapest, however I lived in Israel, in Italy, and in the United States as well. I'm a psychologist and a freelance tour guide, singer, language teacher, and coordinator of a grass-root, young, Jewish community of Budapest. I have been showing around the Jewish Budapest for quite a while now, and I'm always happy to spice it up with personal stories and current events, get into exciting discussions with you, personalize the tour to your interests, and share unique little facts that you can only hear from a local.

Staðsetning

We'll walk around the old Jewish quarter, which for a short period of history was the ghetto, we will see the main synagogues from outside, and we will enter the Orthodox synagogue and see the little "village" around it, we will see unique houses, and streets, culinary options and other surprises will wait for you on the way, but most of all, I will tell you interesting stories, and I'll be happy to customize it, according to your interests.

We really enjoyed this tour with Dora. She took us inside one of the most beautiful synagogues in Europe and to a special coffee shop to eat delicious traditional Jewish Flodni pastries. She has a lot of knowledge of the Jewish heritage and culture of Budapest and Hungary, which she shares generously. And the fact that she’s Jewish herself gives her a greater insight and understanding of the whole subject.

Dora's tour was the first guided tour I have ever enjoyed, and I have been to many! She was very open to the audience, shared relevant, touching and nuanced stories, was in constant dialogue with us and made sure everyone felt comfortable and included. I have lived in Budapest for almost two years now, and Dora showed the aspects of the city that had been completely hidden from me, and she also made my mom, who was a visitor in the city, feel very much at home in BP. The event was also very special to us as Dora gave us an opportunity to share our own family story, which somehow went in parallel with some aspects of the Jewish history of Hungary and of Budapest. I totally recommend the experience to everyone, and I am extremely thankful to Dora for what she is doing - this is much more than just a guided tour!

Dora is a most eloquent and informative tour guide, who presents an important part of Budapest’s (and indeed Hungary’s) history in a sensitive and interesting manner. It’s a fascinating local tour like no other and I would recommend it to anybody visiting Budapest who wants a deeper understanding of the city and it’s rich cultural background.

It was very pleasant to meet Dora and get some of her insights about the life in the Jewish neighbourhood. I went alone. I would like to take my wife, daughter and parents in law to Budapest and if we do, I hope Dora is still doing these tours because I would like to take them all to meet her and learn about the Jewish culture and history.
