Experience the city that brought us Søren Kierkegaard

The philosopher Søren Kierkegaard is one of the strangest figures Copenhagen has seen, and is undoubtedly one of the greatest minds to come out of this city as well as being a world-renowned philosopher!

Born and raised in the capital, Kierkegaard (1813-1855) felt most at home walking the streets he knew better than most, talking to vendors, craftsmen and the ordinary people.

On this walking tour in Copenhagen, you'll get the story of Kierkegaard's childhood, his growing up, his faith and philosophy, his struggles, mistakes and not least his unrequited love for Regine – to whom he dedicated his life’s work.

The Copenhagen that Kierkegaard knew was quite different from today. With no sewerage, thousands of cows, pigs and horses, hundreds of thousands of rats – Copenhagen was known as one of the dirtiest cities in Europe. And yet it was: “Big enough to be a major city, small enough that there is no market price on human beings.”

You don’t need to be a philosopher to join this tour. If you enjoy a good story or just want to learn about Copenhagen’s history, this might be the tour for you.
Other things to note
Please note: the meeting place is NYTORV - and NOT Kongens Nytorv. :-)

After a decade of teaching history, Danish and social studies, in 2014 I decided to quit my job and start doing what I always loved the most – telling stories and sharing my passion for this wonderful city of mine.
Though I know every inch of the city, there is still new discoveries every day – and new, curious people to engage with.

Kierkegaard has had a profound effect on my own life, not least the story of his life and his struggles to get to grips with his family history and his emphasis on making choices in life.
I am no philosopher, but I know his thinking well enough to comfortably say like his rolemodel Socrates: "... I know nothing". But every tour makes me wiser...

I have five experiences on Airbnb. How about a tour of the emerging district at the old Carlsberg brewery: https://www.airbnb.dk/experiences/404128

Staðsetning

We'll meet at the stairs in front of the City Court House, right next to Kierkegaards birthplace, and visit the places he lived and worked during his short life.
This tour takes us to some of the most iconic sights of the city, such as the main cathedral "Vor Frue" church, the "secret" Grey Friars square (Gråbrødre torv) and the wonderful Royal Library garden. Some of the stops - especially during winter season, will be indoors.

Mads is a great tour guide. I had to take a private tour because myum has wlaking problems. We are Italian and we were worried that we could not understand proprely instead has been easy and a pleasure to listen. Actuality, my sister was worried that it would have been a boring city tour instead she enjoyed it very much. Meds has pleanned the guide so well and he made sure my mum could rest when needed. His way of explaining the hystory has been so enjoyable and interesting. Thank you so much and I strongly advise to book Meds 's tour.

Mads was very good at making the Copenhagen where Kierkegaard lived and worked come alive, and you really felt a sense of the extremely small territory in which he spent his entire life, the love he had for the ordinary people he met on his daily walks around the streets and the conflicts he had with just about everyone else. It was gossipy and biographical rather than philosophical or theological, which probably suits most guests.

I joined the Mads' walking tour with my family and it was one of the best experiences that our family had during our whole trip to Europe. Walking around Copenhagen, Mads told us vivid stories of Kierkegaard's life as well as history of the city, which was very interesting. I strongly recommend this program if you are planning to visit Copenhagen!

Vale la pena conocer el mundo de Kirkegaard de la mano de un conocedor. Otra forma de introducirse en Copenhagen y su historia.

I've done three tours with Mads. I must say all three (WW2, HC Andersen and Kierkegaard) have been amazing. It really shows that Mads is passionate about the tours he runs, from the history, to the riff raft of Copenhagen city life, to its unique population. Whether you are participating as a tourist, a student of history, or as an enthusiast, Mads offers a passionate but an objective view of Copenhagen's rich heritage for all types of participants. Of note, the gods of Copenhagen might throw a weather tantrum, so come prepared with brollies and hoodies.
