Það sem verður gert

Explore the Wye Valley in style with your own Blue Badge Guide. Experience the English countryside like you never imagined, captured so well by the writer William Wordsworth and painter JMW Turner. I will meet you in central Oxford where we will begin our day outside the famous Bodleian Library. I will tell you about the University’s fine buildings, its history and some of its famous alumni. We will then board the minibus and head out of Oxford for the 90-minute drive to the start of the Wye Valley at Chepstow. We then head up the dramatic valley towards the evocative ruins of Tintern Abbey on the banks of the river, destroyed by Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries. After a tour of the abbey, we continue north and over the Welsh border into Monmouth , birthplace of King Henry V and the family home of Charles Rolls, aviation pioneer and co-founder of Rolls-Royce. We have lunch there before following the river to Symonds Yat, its glorious riverine landscape created by a loop in the River Wye. A little further north is the sturdy Goodrich Castle, a classic example of medieval castle evolution. Ross-on-Wye is where John Egerton, who later became Bishop of Durham, started taking friends on boat trips down the valley in 1745, making the Wye Valley the birthplace of the modern tourist industry. We return to Oxford from there, via the city of Gloucester and The Cotswolds.

Frekari upplýsingar um Tony

Tony

Based in the beautiful city of Oxford, where I have lived for almost 30 years, I am a Blue Badge Guide for the Heart of England, a region that covers some of the most iconic destinations in the country. The Blue Badge is the UK’s highest guiding qualification. Whilst my training is thorough, my job is also about passion. I enjoy telling my guests about every aspect of a place, its history, architecture, personalities, art, geography; I love the great outdoors, and am just as much at home with industrial heritage as ancient stone circles. I am a licensed driver-guide with my own minibus, operating from Oxford to destinations all over the region and beyond. I am also a descendant of the Banbury Gullivers, whose graves in St Mary’s churchyard, Banbury, inspired Jonathan Swift to a name for his famous protagonist.
