This unique three-part, 3 hours, walking tour will begin where Manhattan began - at the National Museum of the American Indian. Each part of the tour will last approximately 1 hour. This first leg of the tour will start in Lower Manhattan. Specifically, Bowling Green, where the first enslaved Africans started building the infrastructure of the city, and end at Wall St when the enslaved Africans were brought and sold.
The second leg of the tour will start in the Financial District. We will walk up Wall St to Federal Hall - a site next to a famous free African who owned and operated a famous Oyster House in 1825.
The last leg will start around the Brooklyn Bridge, including the African Burial Ground National Monument plaza.
This tour is great for groups, team-building, field trips, and it's especially beneficial for school-age children.
Depending on the mood and convenience of the group we can stop for snacks, at any time.
Each location is based on a specific chapter in my book. There will be several restroom breaks.
Please note - Finding parking is extremely difficult in Lower Manhattan. Indoor garages will cost between $35-40. I advise using public transportation or car service.

Greetings! I'm a native New Yorker, a self-published author of the book, "You Are Here - A Geographical History of Enslaved and Free Africans in Manhattan: 1613 - 1865," and a certified NYC tour guide. For the past 2 years, I've given presentations about my book at schools and community organizations. I've lived in all five boroughs of NYC, but I claim Manhattan. I've worked in Manhattan as a Paralegal for over 20 years, I was educated here, I've visited most of NYC's museums, I've partied and experienced the nightlife here, and I survived the 9/11 tragedy at the WTC. This city, past & present represents my soul's work; I would like to share my love for the city with this fascinating African American tour of NYC.

Staðsetning

This fun-filled educational tour will cover the areas south of Brooklyn Bridge and the areas east of Broadway. Some of the sites on this tour are famous, i.e. Brooklyn Bridge, Federal Hall, Fraunces Tavern, South Street Seaport, etc. and some are lesser-known. However, out of the 20 sites, they all have a connection with African American history that few people are aware of - this is what makes this tour unique.

Lawrence was an excellence host. First, he was able to accommodate my partner and I on New Year’s Eve as we came to New York to celebrate. We got an excellent history of lower Manhattan, and Larry did a wonderful job stopping at locations to explain the black history we may not otherwise hear. Starting with statues at an iconic music I have visited before, Larry pointed out nuances I would have never noticed. From that moment we knew it was going to be an excellent tour and it was. I especially loved hearing about famous taverns and living landmarks along black American’s path to emancipation, and it was nice knowing we can be a part of history.

My friends and I had the best experience on this tour with Lawrence. His love and knowledge of NYC shined through. We had powerful conversations & discovered so much more about black history/ NYC history. I would recommend this tour to all of my friends & family. It was truly amazing! Thank you again Lawrence.

Extraordinary tour. I cannot rate this highly enough. I want to go again and bring all my family and friends. I learned so much about history, architecture, political and economic realities and the Black individuals who built lower Manhattan. I see the city with a fresh perspective. So stimulating, and fun too.

I definitely recommend this tour and experience to everyone! The tour exceeding my expectations and I left the tour with more knowledge than what I came with. Lawerence's analysis of historical events, statues, and components of the tour was very insightful and thorough. This tour taught me to pay more attention to the historical events depicted all around me. For the amount of times I have visited NYC, I have never gained as much information and historical knowledge as I did during this tour.

You may have visited areas at Battery Park and Wall Street, but you've probably never seen them the way you will on this tour. There is so much African American history hidden in plain sight, and Larry puts a spotlight on it in impressive detail and provides a fuller picture of the history of Manhattan and the United States. His style is thoughtful and engaging, and time spent with him flies by. This is a tour not to be missed, unlike any other.
