Það sem verður gert

We'll meet at our pick-up point and immediately head to my hometown of Gombak, 40-minutes on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur. Gombak was the central hub for indigenous communities in Peninsular Malaysia in the late 1960s and a lot of our history can be traced to this place. Once we are in Gombak, we will embark on a cultural journey where we will explore the secondary rainforest that remain to learn about the significance of nature to my people. My daughter Jureen, will welcome you and guide you into our village. With the forest acting as our backdrop, I will teach you the fundamental skills of foraging, fire starting and basic construction techniques. Guests on this experience will be contributing to my vision of reviving the village's pioneering campsite by rebuilding the 'pondok' or shelter progressively. Each week will be focusing on different aspects of the basecamp with activities ranging from building the structure, putting up the walls, to weaving the roof using handed-down Semai methods and natural resources from the surrounding forest. After having your self-cooked meals, we will end our time together with traditional Asli arts, crafts and games. By sharing the deeper roots of my culture that link all these practices and artefacts to the modern world, I hope guests will find our stories worth retelling and help keep them relevant in the world of today.

Frekari upplýsingar um Raman

Raman

My name is Raman and I am a descendant of the Semai tribe. After marrying my wife, I moved into the Temuan village I call home today as per Orang Asli tradition. I have traveled across Malaysia, learning from the various Orang Asli tribes and carry the stories of many with me. From survival skills to secret spice rubs for a good barbecue, I am your man for the job. I am a proud guardian of my peoples' culture and I am passionate about keeping old traditions alive by passing them down to the younger generation. I love meeting people from across the world and exchanging stories because I think that is one way to live forever. Proudly co-hosted with my daughter Jureen and our friends at Native, Daniel, Sasha and Sean.

Staðsetning

We will meet at The Compass, the office space that Native calls home in Subang Jaya. From there, my friends from Native will escort you by either car or van to Gombak where I will be waiting for you. Gombak is a dispersed township on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur and we will be in the corridor of Batu 12 (Mile 12) to Batu 16 (Mile 16), where groups of Orang Asli have been dwelling since before the formation of Malaysia.
