In this workshop, you can look forward to a fun, hands-on session going over everything you ever wanted to know about using and maintaining a wild-yeast, naturally fermented sourdough starter. By learning the techniques used by artisan bakers, you’ll get peak performance from your starter and will learn how to prepare it for baking all your favorites like pizza and traditional rustic loaves. In this 2-hour workshop, we’ll look at all the angles to feeding and maintaining a sourdough starter, and use it to make a yummy sourdough flatbread in class. At the end of class, we'll stretch and put toppings on your very own, freshly baked San Francisco sourdough and we'll enjoy them together. You’ll go home with your own starter, as well as the knowledge and confidence to use it to bake your own sourdough bread at home.

I've been baking and teaching about the art and science of sourdough for 10 years in San Francisco. I love the different flavors that come out with sourdough, especially enjoy the challenge of working to make the perfect loaf. I've worked closely with many other food entrepreneurs and chefs in the Bay Area, and love the diversity and quality of food which we are surrounded by. Our bakery is housed in La Victoria Bakery, a Mexican Panaderia, which has been a wonderful partnership.

Ashton, our primary sourdough bread instructor has been working with Sour Flour for several years. In addition to teaching classes, he cares for our sourdough starter, mixes large batches of sourdough, and you can often find him at the Farmer's Market selling our breads.

We are housed in a small bakery in the Bayview and share the space with La Victoria SF. You'll get to experience a fully functioning production bakery, and experience some of the differences from your home kitchen.

I attended the class with my son. It was the perfect 2-hour experience. Danny did an excellent job working with the group. I have made 4 beautiful sourdough boules since I attended the class.

We had a good time learning how to make bread. We were complete beginners and this Experience broke down bread making and made it easy to understand. As promised, we came home with sourdough starters and flatbreads that we made in class. The actual kitchen where the Experience is held is a bit dirty and not much to look at. Also, Danny isn’t actually the host and the person who taught us didn’t seem totally enthusiastic to be teaching the Experience, but we learned a lot and are excited to make our own bread.

Our host was incredibly charismatic, and knowledgeable and passionate about sourdough and baking in general, which was great. That being said, I felt that overall the class was quite overpriced (even in SF) for the experience, especially given the class size of nearly 20. TLDR - not a special experience. Too much instruction and not enough doing for your average first-time bread maker. I’ve done other Airbnb experiences in SF (e.g., ramen making) where the price was similar but virtually all elements were better (e.g., more individual ownership over your food instead of a group approach, more food to eat throughout, offering of wine, better space, smaller class size). If you’re really looking for detailed instruction or an ability to troubleshoot making sourdough with an expert, this class may be for you, but otherwise, I might consider other experiences.

Fun and knowledgeable instructor who clearly has a passion for what he's talking about. The class felt a little crowded and is definitely geared more to people without previous sourdough experience, though our instructor was great in terms of answering questions. I would have liked to have a few specific recipes in class to go through the steps together because now that I'm on my own with the starter it's hard to figure out recipes to try since it seems like everyone on the internet does it differently. Generally a good class, though!

Had a great time learning and working with sourdough. Host was super knowledgeable about bread and explained in high detail how everything interacted during the feeding, proofing and baking process. The venue was a bit cramped and everyone shared a small communal table for kneading, but it was an eclectic group and it was cool hearing everyone's experiences with bread. Super interesting historical background for the starter that the bakery maintains! I think there was supposed to be an email cheatsheet of instructions on how to feed and maintain our starter, but I haven't received anything yet. There was a lot of detail and timing specifics mentioned, I hope it doesn't die!
